What you need to know about moving to Cary NC
Cary is the town that won't stop!
Where to search for Cary Homes
We moved to Cary in the mid 90s when people were just beginning to hear about this adorable quaint town which is a suburb of Raleigh NC. The population at that time was about 80k +/-. I first heard about the town when I read an article about SAS headquarters on a Delta flight magazine. My husband & I had visited NC before we had kids and decided we would move here if we ever had an opportunity. Just a few years later a job opportunity came up for him in Cary. We wasted no time selling our home and packing up to move to this lovely town.
How it started:
We settled in West Cary when Hwy 55 was a 2 lane road. People thought we were out in the middle of nowhere. There were still tobacco fields, strawberry fields and other mini farms around. There were very few restaurants and most were chain restaurants. The closest grocery store opened about the same time that our house was built. Until that time, we had to drive to the other side of Cary to go to Target or Walmart. We loved our little area. We met many wonderful people who had moved here around the same time. People were moving from all over the US and other countries. Our kids are still friends with many of those original friends.
How it's going:
Cary's current population is about 180k (2023) and growing fast. We have two and three generations of families relocating to the area. People move here by choice not because they have to. Most of the farms have made way for development. Cary has expanded into Chatham and Durham counties. Hwy 55 is now a 4 lane road and you can access the 540 toll road and US 64 from it. We have 3 Targets within minutes of our house and a couple Walmarts. You can shop at about any grocery store you want including Harris Teeter, Publix, Wegmans, Lowes, Lidl, H-Mart, Aldi, Fresh Market, Trader Joes, Whole Foods, and Food Lion. Many new restaurants have opened and a good percentage are not chain restaurants. So many new schools have opened up in West Cary. The schools and STEM programs draw a lot of people to the area. The three major NC Universities (UNC, NC State, and Duke) are just outside Cary. The Cary area is synonymous with higher education. When it comes to sports, we have USA Baseball and Women's Soccer in addition to many youth sports. Cary is a contender to be the new headquarters for US Soccer. Having kids who played soccer during most of their childhood and knowing many kids and adults in the area love soccer, it seems like a perfect fit for our town.
Downtown Cary has added a state of the art library, is adding a gorgeous 7 acre park and the downtown area is thriving. Fenton which is a huge live, work, play community has opened bringing jobs, housing and a ton of retail and restaurant business. It is one of the largest commercial developments in the country. Many companies such as Epic Games has made Cary their headquarters. Cary is positioned just minutes outside of Raleigh and Durham and about 30-40 minutes from Chapel Hill. The major highways run around the town making it very easy to access other areas of NC. Cary is now known as a top Tech town making Cary area is one of the most sought after areas.
