Owning a pool home in Florida

Real Estate Agent with Team TLC - Mihara & Associates, Inc

Our family enjoys using our pool year round in our Land O Lakes, Florida home. Many people heat the pool in the winter and enjoy year round use. While we do not heat ours we enjoy the hot tub during the colder months and the refreshing pool in the warmer months. The pool area becomes part of the living and entertainment space because of our beautiful year round warmer climate!

Owning a pool in Florida can be a great way to enjoy the warm climate and make the most of your outdoor space. Here are some things to consider if you are thinking about owning a pool in Florida:

Maintenance: Pools require regular maintenance to keep them clean and safe for swimming. This includes regularly testing the chemical balance of the water, cleaning the pool walls and floor, and maintaining the filtration and circulation systems. You may want to hire a pool service to help with this maintenance, or you can learn to do it yourself. We prefer to hire it out because it seems very cost and time effective!

Safety: Pools can be a hazard, especially for young children who may not yet know how to swim. It's important to take safety precautions, such as installing a fence around the pool and keeping it locked when not in use. You may also want to consider alarms and safety covers.

Cost: Owning a pool can be expensive, both in terms of installation and ongoing maintenance. The cost of a pool in Florida can vary depending on the size and type of pool you choose, as well as the features you want, such as a spa or waterfall. You'll also need to factor in the cost of water and electricity to keep the pool running.

Permits: In Florida, you will need to obtain permits to install a pool. You'll also need to comply with state and local regulations regarding pool safety and maintenance.

Enjoyment: Despite the potential challenges, owning a pool in Florida can be a great way to enjoy your outdoor space and make the most of the warm weather. Swimming is a great form of exercise and can be a fun activity for the whole family. Just be sure to weigh the costs and responsibilities before making the decision to install a pool.

If you are considering building a pool in Florida, there are several things to keep in mind:

Regulations: You will need to check with your local government to make sure that you are following all of the regulations and requirements for building a pool in your area. In Florida, there are strict rules and guidelines for pool construction, including fencing, pool depths, and drain covers.

Design: There are many different design options for a pool in Florida, including traditional rectangular shapes, freeform designs, and infinity edges. You will want to work with a pool contractor to design a pool that fits your needs, budget, and the layout of your property.

Materials: There are several options for pool materials, including concrete, fiberglass, and vinyl. Each has its own advantages and disadvantages, so you will want to do your research and choose the one that works best for your needs.

Maintenance: Florida's warm and humid climate can make it easier for algae and bacteria to grow in your pool, so you will need to make sure that you are properly maintaining your pool to keep it clean and safe. This may include regular cleaning and chemical treatments.

Cost: Building a pool in Florida can be expensive, so you will want to make sure that you have a budget in mind and are prepared for any unexpected costs that may arise.

Overall, building a pool in Florida can be a great investment in your property and your lifestyle. Just be sure to do your research, follow regulations, and work with a reputable contractor to ensure that your pool is safe, functional, and beautiful.

Buying a pool home with an existing pool is a good choice if you are certain you would like a pool because the cost of the pool addition is usually more costly than what you would pay extra for an existing pool home (vs a non pool home).

Nicely done.  We loved our pool when we had one.  Southern states and warm weather make a pool really necessary.

Welcome to Active Rain, a great place to learn, share, and network. I'm not a pool person; I sink rather than swim. If I was in your area, I hope I would have friends I could visit to sit around the pool and indulge in a few beverages. Enjoy your experience in the Rain.

Nice post. I grew up with a pool surrounded by trees that dropped prickly balls all over our yard. It was my job skim and vacuum the pool. I love the screen cages you build around pools in Florida. I would have loved that when I was a kid.
