Thankful/Throwback Thursdays...So Grateful It’s Not 2021

We have temperatures in the low 80s this week and are incredibly grateful for that. Just over two years ago, our state had snow, ice, and freezing temperatures.

South Texas is always prepared for hurricanes and floods but if it snows or there is ice on the roads, we drive as if we’ve never driven a car before.

I’m a huge believer in learning from experiences…good and bad. I’m almost obsessive about it. For example, after each hurricane, I’d make a list of what to do or have for the next hurricane.

What did I learn from our rare ice and snowstorm from 2 years ago?

Having lived in hurricane-prone areas for most of our lives, we had the usual food, water batteries, etc.

However, going without coffee for a day was enough to convince Larry to rig up generators for the house (not the full house one which is overkill) but enough to keep our fridge, lights, tv, and internet going.

For now, I’m thankful that there are no snowstorms headed our way.

Good morning Kathy. Every time the weather turns in Chicago, I have to ask myself why I am here and not in Florida? Then, I get ready to go watch y grandkids for the day and the thought goes away. Maybe someday there will be sun in Chicago. It is burning brightly in my heart. Enjoy your day.

Wayne Martin I get it. there are many times when I miss FL but then all it takes is one family gathering and I know we made the right choice to move back to Houston.

Hi Kathy,
It sounds like Texas weather is like a box of chocolates.  LOL

We had a nice reprieve from the cold, but it's back.

Carol Williams that's it exactly. It's not unusual to have 20 to  30 degree changes in temperatures in one day.

Kathy, you are lucky, we were at zero this morning, but did not really get much snow - only about 3" over two days.  Think it is too cold to snow.

Kathy:

I'd say you have a lot to be thankful for given your current weather and 2 years ago.

It's SoCal winter still here - low 40s again last night and more rain today. The heavy winds have at least stopped for now after knocking down a number of trees (not by us, thankfully). We are due for several days of rain. But much of the country seems to be experiencing far worse weather than us!!

Jeff Dowler, CRS the low 40s aren't bad but rain and high winds can make it hard.  The rodeo begins this weekend and there should be warm weather for the BBQ cook off.

HI Rocky- I have never heard of that word (graupel) until now and looked it up!!!  The first time it snowed in Houston when I was a little girl, I didn't want to walk in the yard and make it disappear.

Hi Kathy,

I remember that event.  It was mind-boggling how the grid shut down.  I remember our family being without electricity during Hurricane Carla in 1961 for many days.  Anytime the power goes out it is my first thought. Fortunately, we have a gas fireplace and natural gas BBQ, and all the supplies we need. I think it is very smart to have a generator to power the essentials.  It also gives one peace of mind.

BTW, I heard on the news that somewhere in Texas it got up to 100º yesterday!  Now that boggles my mind as well! We have had snow flurries all week!

Sheri Sperry - MCNE® you and I were here at the same time because I remember Hurricane Carla. I stood at the door and watched the rain all day. I still find it hard to believe that your area has snow!!! I'm going to have to find out where it was 100 degrees in TX.

That was such a huge storm you went through back then and I remember your stories.  Smart idea to buy a generator.  We've been thinking of that in case during monsoon season our power goes out.  A small one is all we'd need as we could hang out in the family room kitchen area if AC went out.  And keep the fridge/freezer up and running.  Same with you - out door cooking is what we do most of the time so that's easy!
