Keepin’ it in the neighborhood.

Last night there was enough of a break in the storms hitting the Greater Sacramento Region, to allow for several old farts to get out and celebrate a couple 80th birthdays.

This is kind of a long story I’m going to try and keep short. Bare with me!

Bret Harte Court is a short one block street in the heart of Sacramento's Oak Park, When I was a kid growing up, there were several of us near the same age living there. Last evening was a testament to how long we’ve known each other. The relationships we forged, evolved with time, but we've managed to keep love as treasure.

I'll try to sort it all out for you with this first photo. See that guy, with the cap on, pictured next to the guy on the left? That's John Jeffcoat. He and I grew up 4 doors apart. I've known him since I was 2 years old. Now, let's skip over to the gal pictured on the far right. That's Bonnie Dodge McAdams. She lived right next door to John. They were engaged to be married for awhile. However, time got into mischief, and she married Tim, the guy on the far left. Tim worked at the gas station across the street from my house, or at least he hung out there.

When John returned from Germany after his stint in the Army in 1962, he and I married for a number of years. He is the father of most of my 4 children. Though our marriage bit the dust, we have remained friends, and still live in homes about 500 feet apart - The furthest apart we've been since I was 2.

The lady in the middle of this photo is Pat. Pat is John's new wife. They've been married around 30 years or so now. Pat didn't grow up on Bret Harte Court, but she did march in 4th of July parades around the corner on 35th Street. Bonnie also marched in those parades. I never did. . .I watched!

So, there you have it. The point of this first photo, is to demonstrate relationships can change, they can evolve, but they don't need to be destroyed. They can continue to be more treasured with each coming day!

Four of us pictured have turned, or will turn 80 years of age this year. 1943 was a really good year. John is a little older than the rest of us, but not by a whole lot.
Last night, we celebrated the 80th birthdays of Bonnie and Tim. Happy Birthday, you two! When you think back to the past, and consider where we are now. . .Who could have imagined?

The party was hosted by Darren and Jenny, Bonnie and Tim's children, in the barn on Darren's beautiful estate in Newcastle.

Hi Myrl- there are so many things I love about your post. Of course, the photos, as usual, are outstanding. I love the ties that still hold you all together and especially what you said..."relationships can change, they can evolve, but they don't need to be destroyed. "

Myrl Jeffcoat - I love this beautiful story you shared about how the five of you "managed to keep love as treasure." Through love and war, sickness and in health, children, divorce, new marriages, and grandchildren your bonds grew stronger without hatred, being distanced from each other, or regrets. And to think it started when you were born and you all connected to each other from the same neighborhood, schools, and environment. And your love for each other continued to grow all of your lives.

Happy Birthday to all of you. This is one of the most beautiful human interest stories that I ever read. It could be a feature story in something like Reader's Digest.

Sheri Sperry - MCNE® - I think the longer we shuffle around this earth, we realize it is the relationships we forge that provide the most treasure.

Dorie Dillard Austin TX - I appreciate that you came back for seconds.😊

George Souto - I have special relationships that are so old that I barely remember when they began.

faye schubert - Thus far, water management seems to be doing a great job managing our dams.  They let out enough water to make room for the melting snowpack, but not so much that it floods us downstream.

Endre Barath, Jr. - That evening, while sitting in a comfortable chair in that barn, with the fire pit blazing, I looked around that room in almost disbelief at the years that had passed.  There were children (now grown) with grandchildren( darn near grown), and they had all emanated from us.

Jane Chaulklin-Schott - I think when you come of a certain age, you realize there's little time left for hate!

Patricia Feager, MBA, CRS, GRI,MRP - I can clearly say, my ex-husband, John, I have known longer than I can remember.  I do remember the first memory though.  He was about 6 or so, he had been a stutterer when very young.  My mom asked him how he stopped.  He replied that he thought about what he was going to say before saying it.  I don't recall him ever stuttering again.

Myrl Jeffcoat - your memories of John, your marriage, children, and friends reminds me of those Precious Moments figurines. My mom used to collect Precious Moments but I don't know what happened to her large collection.

If  someone could make it possible to get the artist to make figurines of each of you as the group, it would remain a treasure forever.

The message to me is, when there is love, united you stand together forever.

Sometimes just being very good friends is a better relationship than being married. When kids are involved, it is not good to be adversaries, regardless of how old the kids may be.

It tooks a while for me to be able to smooth over the rough edges with my husband's first wife but we finally got there.  Not nearly as good as your relationships on your court! but it is so important to get along.
