Tech Snippets: Show the Desktop

By
Education & Training with Tech Training for You!

Tech Snippets - a new series of short posts showing helpful tools and methods that could easily be missed or overlooked, yet are things that are extremely helpful once you know!
Do you know this one?...

Show the Desktop - On a Windows PC

How many app windows do you have running simultaneously? 3, or 5, or 15? (they easily add up). The quickest way to "minimize all" is by using one of the following two shortcuts to show your desktop again. If you are a Windows user, you can use the Windows Key + D shortcut to do this. There's also another way that I think is even easier. Drop your mouse cursor all the way into the bottom right corner and then click. This is a special spot that is designed to activate the "show desktop" command. Quickly just move your mouse far enough right and far enough down and it will be in the corner (don't sweat being precise about it, since once you have moved far enough over and down, it will have reached the limit). Click & Done! (click that spot again later if you want all the previous windows restored)

Show the Desktop - On a Mac

If you want to show desktop on a Mac you can use Command+F3 (Mission Control) keyboard shortcut.

See this howtogeek.com article to read more and to set up customized shortcuts.

If you like the mouse in a corner technique noted above, you can do something very similar by programming your "hot corners" on your mac. See that linked article to read more.

Craig Daniels - Oh, how I wish I could meet with you to improve my Surface Pro. Your tips are so valuable but they don't work for me. I am missing out on excellent technology. I am not in a position to buy a MAC or anything else at this time.

I have always been a windows guy. I prefer windows over Mac. Surface pros are nice computers also. If you ever need some tech tutoring 1300 miles doesn't mean much in our virtual world. You can always reach out to me Patricia Feager, MBA, CRS, GRI,MRP

I always learn something valuable from your posts!  I remember having a job where I had to have a lot of tabs open and that was a sign to me that I was too busy with that job, haha.

I have a Mac and usually use Command Tab to get to the list of open icons I can pick from. I did not know about Command F3 which probably works even better. Thank you!

Command Tab is good to use for switching, this tip is good to get a whole stack of apps minimized at once Kat Palmiotti

Thanks for the tip, Craig. I had no idea. I rarely have that many windows open at the same time so it had never occurred to me to look for a shortcut.

I use the minimize button at the top right on the toolbar (or task bar, as it might be called). But you taught me something new. I was unaware of the bottom right. I tried it and it works!

The minimize button at the top right is good for minimizing one app. This tip has super powers of minimizing ALL the apps. Glad you gave it a try Pat Starnes-Front Gate Realty
