Tuesdays Treasures…Sportsmanship

My oldest great-nephew had a major Taekwondo tournament this past weekend that included participants from all over.

It lasted all day, with different levels and age groups. Luke helped with some of the judgings and competed as well.

We are so proud of his efforts! Luke took the Silver medal!

At the end of the day, they all showed their respect by shaking hands, hugging, and congratulating each other.

Team activities are so important in helping our young people learn about competition, winning, and more importantly, sportsmanship.

When you go out onto that field it's going to be war. Sportsmanship is playing to the best of your abilities and then, afterwards, shaking your opponent's hand.
Bruce Grobbelaar

Victory is in the quality of competition and not the final score.  Mike Marshall

Good sportsmanship goes beyond the game; it starts with respect.

Congratulations to Luke on winning the silver medal. Good sportsmanship is an important thing for kids to learn... it will come in very handy when they are adults. And I agree with Tommy Hilfiger.

Hello Kathy - congratulations to Luke and to all those participating.  While I wasn't active in Taekwondo, I do understand how competition can build confidence and camaraderie.

Hi Michael Jacobs I agree. It's nice that he has the confidence to try to defend himself if he had to but more than that he's learned discipline and focus.

Good sportsmanship and competition helps build character.

You don't get a "participation salary raise" in the real world of business.

Yes Kathy Team sports teaches a lot to the young. However, we have been to games where some of the parents NEVER learned this!

I think sports are a very valuable tool for teaching sportsmanship.  I have a grandson who is a 3rd degree blackbelt in Tae Kwon Do.  I enjoyed watching him compete against others from the western states in Reno, Nevada. He went home with two golds and a silver.  He was best in weapons and forms. This photo was taken when he was about 10.  He had just received his 2nd degree blackbelt.

Ed Silva I wonder if professional sports learned to shake hands after the game from the youth leagues or vice versa.

Kathy Streib  The kids do it and when it comes to the pros, the only sport that meets to exchange pleasantries are hockey, and the tennis stars.

Hi Kathy,

This is a wonderful accomplishment Kathy and I can understand why you are so proud!  It really says a lot about Luke's expertise when he is asked to judge the competition as well.

My grandson has been learning Taekwondo since he was 5 years old. He is 7 years old and has an orange belt.  I go to some of the award ceremonies for the different levels.  It really is a wonderful discipline to help young people in their development.  There are a lot of women and girls training as well.  I love it!

Sheri Sperry - MCNE® we have gone to some as well and yes, there are young women doing Taekwondo as well!!!  I'm still amazed when they break boards.

Congrats to Luke, silver is awesome!!!  Also, wow to the grandson of Myrl Jeffcoat, 2nd-degree blackbelt at the age of 10!  Not sure how old he is now, but a 3rd-degree black belt sounds pretty serious.  Since I am not much of a fighter, I would enjoy having either of them by my side in case things got ugly, haha.  I like seeing Ninja skills in action!!!

Congratulations to Luke!  How cool is that?!  Sports teaches our young children many disciplines.  When I used to coach kids, I always felt that sense of responsibility to be a person they would remember as being a good mentor, not just a good coach.  Best wishes to Luke the he has great experiences from coaches!  Love the quotes :)
