What is your stereotype?

By
Real Estate Agent with Wayne M Martin

In March of 2012 I posted the following:

Do you often wonder what the customer you have spent the day with thinks of you? Do you wonder what the customer sitting across from you at lunch, at your expense is really thinking about their house hunting experience? Welcome to the world of sales!

People do not think, they stereotype. They do not conclude, they categorize. They do not calculate, they assume. How do people stereotype you? The first obstacle that you must overcome is not the competition, it's the stereotype outsider's have of you.

Is there still merit to it? I believe so! Do you assume and stereotype ? Do you think people stereotype you? Is the stereotype they decide upon really you or do you have work to do?

Enjoy your day!

Interesting, people often make assumptions, and hence this can lead to stereotyping which may be incorrect. We all need to ask more qualifying questions to discover the real person beneath the exterior. We also need to continually ask our selves also Who am I?

Hi Wayne- now if ever there was a post for our Michael Jacobs to ponder, this would be one. Stereotypes can become a vicious cycle...people are going to think of us as acting a certain way, so why not act that way. If we can enter each meeting of someone with a clean slate that would be a good start.

Kathy Streib - a cycle, yes but I don't think it's necessarily vicious.  You're right, it's ponder-worthy.

Hello Wayne - I don't think it's unusual (or unreasonable) to think that certain thoughts come to the minds of others we interact.  First impressions can be important and the ones that last are as well.   It's interesting to ponder.  Now, where will it lead?  To be continued. . .

Wayne Martin - One of the things I love the most about ActiveRain are critical thinkers like you! Wayne, I am thankful you shared "Just a Thought," because it is very powerful.

This is the part that calls for an examination of conscious:

"People do not think, they stereotype. They do not conclude, they categorize. They do not calculate, they assume."

Hi Wane I'm sure people stereotype each other as well as myself.  Since I've mainly worked with our SOI of clients and business plus referrals, they know who I am and how I do business as it's been 35 years. I know what they expert - knowledge, expertise and professionalism - and I'm pretty sure I deliver that time and time again.  I recall that old saying I learned years ago - If you assume something, you make an A** out of you and me! Ask questions first before you assume.

Interesting. I had seller clients one time who told me they were not happy with realtors, and they lumped me in there with the rest of them. Until the deal was done. Then they told me I had changed their opinion of the real estate profession and they were grateful. :-)

I'm laughing while thinking about how I'm stereotyped because I think of  myself as trailblazer and not a follower of the easy path, but the unique path.

Hi Wayne Martin - This is ponder-worthy.  I do remember way back in college a Psychology class where that subject was discussed.  I will leave that to others to make a decision if they want to stereotype.  I personally think we should not put anyone into any category.  It is better to get to know them beneath the surface and learn to embrace their positive qualities.

Good morning Wayne,

A very ponder-worthy topic. As much as we don't want to stereotype people we do. It's all about first impressions and everyone is different so a first impression can mean so many things to different people. Much is written and stereotypes people in categories so many times as hard as we try we are influenced by what we read and see.

Quite interesting!  We do the same when meeting new people-very easy to stereotype.

They don't conclude  they categorize - great point - I think most people are either too self absorbed or lazy to look beyond the superficial and try to understand another person

Good question. I'd assume that clients think of me as friendly, engaging and thorough.  But I'm sure other descriptors are out there!   Having completed a DISC evaluation, I know my type and work to define a buyer as to which type they are to better ascertain how best to help them.

I am pretty easy to read on first meeting.  I wear my personality on my sleeve, as some have told me.  I do my best not to assume anything about new clients, as i know after working with me a day or two we will get to know so much about one another.  Enjoyed this post and it got me really thinking ... loved your breakdown:

People do not think, they stereotype. They do not conclude, they categorize. They do not calculate,

I always hoped to come across to people as competent and more importantly as having their best interest at heart.   I like to think I did more often not.

Yes, indeed, people often stereotype others, including salespeople. This is because our brains are cookie clicker constantly trying to make sense of the world around us, and one way we do this is by categorizing people into different groups.
