Glimpses from the Mid-Century Modern Homes Tour 2023

The 2023 Tour of Mid-Century modern homes took me to 9 neighborhoods in Midtown, North and East Phoenix, and in Paradise Valley. The homes on the tour, with one exception, are not for sale. This annual tour is very popular, it sells only 1,000 tickets and they are gone within hours after they are released.

The homes we viewed were selected by architectural historian Alison King. This print of Taliesin West by Alison King adorns my office, and you can easily guess that I am a fan of what she does.

I attend the tours almost each year because they are so enjoyable and inspiring. I also share the knowledge of neighborhoods and the beauty of the homes with clients and friends here on my blog, on my web-site and on my Facebook page.

On this year’s tour, which included homes in historic neighborhoods, tucked-away townhomes and a new build in the mid-century tradition and spirit, I observed and admired the architectural ideas of Ralph Haver IAI, Thomas Pansing, Blaine Drake ( a former apprentice of Frank Lloyd Wright), Ronald Craik, Lescher and Mahoney and interior designer Miles McDermott. The self-guided tour ended at the elegant Eye Opener furniture store,  with some mid-century finds shipped all the way from the Netherlands.

Highlights from the tour for me were the use of clerestory windows - excellent for letting daylight in, while protecting from the desert sun, too. Notice on the photo below - the eves are made of light-colored wood, bringing in more reflective light.

Imagine lying on your couch and watching the everchanging moods and colors of our Arizona skies. This home was conceived as a quiet courtyard, surrounded by lush vegetation and two structures on both sides of the courtyard.

In this home in Willo Historic District, the clever bump-outs in the living room with slot windows let in more indirect light.

Great blog. We have quite a few MCM homes in my area, and I too love their features and style. Makes me feel like a kid again and seeing these properties on TV sitcoms.
I love the fact you linked to your website in the blog post.

J.R. Schloemer, CRS , MCM homes have so many cool features. And when a thoughtful update to today's tastes is done, they are a delight to live in. Thanks for your comment.

Endre Barath, Jr. , I just sold (in January) a mid-century modern home. Some high quality original features were quite fascinating. It will be wonderful to see a post about Frank Lloyd Wright's homes in CA.

Hello Steffy - thank you for sharing your insights into this MCM tour in your area.  And speaking of "insights" clever design techniques such as the use of clerestory windows seem quite appropriate to desert living.  I can understand why you include this as must-attend event.

Michael Jacobs , thanks for your comment. Clerestory windows and  connecting patios and living rooms with wide doors are some of my favorite features.

What fun, Steffy. I'm a fan of home tours like this. Mid-century modern has become a "thing" here in Charlotte in recent years. Of course, when I see some of the furniture, to me it's just what I grew up with. My mother obviously was ahead of her time!

Nina Hollander, Broker , you probably can see some of the mid-century furniture via the link in the blog. I like the elegance and light-weight of the furniture. Thanks for stopping by.

That sounds like a wonderful home tour - I like that it's "themed." Thank you for sharing!

Kat Palmiotti , I like "themed" , too. I add some extra focus for myself - to observe how daylight is brought indoors, how open spaces are used. Thanks for your comment.

Such a cool tour!  I had a client way back in the day that wanted a home that was mid-century modern so I did lots of research for them and even put together a search roping off all of the possible mid-century modern neighborhoods.  They never even bought here but I still benefited from finding out more about mid-century modern.

Brian England , MCM homes can be hard to find. I am glad that there was a newly built home in the mid-century tradition. It is so fascinating, it deserves a special blog about it. I would like more remodelers and builders create in this fashion. Thanks for stopping by.

Steffy Hristova - a Tour of Mid Century Modern homes would be so much fun and interesting! The quality of homes are built to last and this was a great way to showcase the tour of homes.

Yes, Patricia Feager, MBA, CRS, GRI,MRP , you are right - it's a pleasure to see homes built to last. And it has a little bit different flavor than the regular MLS listings tours. On this tour interiors are personalized, while on the MLS tours they are staged primarily to remove the personalization.
