The Buying Of My First and Only House
Kathy Streib and Carol Williams host this month's challenge. They want us to tell them about buying our first home. Some cannot remember their first home or choose to forget the experience; maybe it was purchased with a former spouse.
For me, this is a straightforward challenge because, believe it or not, I am still in that first home we purchased.
My husband was content living comfortably in a spacious apartment with a great balcony view of woods and a stream. I wanted to be a homeowner. My Lee challenged me and said he would consider it if I could find a house in a specific price range. He was sure there was no home we would agree on, especially at that price.
For years I went looking with and without a REALTOR®- Yes, that agent told me I was too picky and would never find a suitable house. Those who know me will agree if you tell me I can't do something, stand back and watch.
So it was in 1976 when I found a for sale by owner, a FSBO, just a couple of houses away from our best friends. The sellers placed a flyer stating (to preserve the integrity of the neighborhood, we are giving our neighbors a chance to find us a buyer).
At the time, we were watching a Sunday football game. My friend and I decided to take a look and leave the guys at home.
We drove by the house, even though it was only a few houses away. We didn't realize it because the street curved around and changed names. I called and made an appointment. My first reaction to seeing the house, I loved it. It was the right house, a brick rancher with a two-car garage and so close to our friends.
I called and made an appointment and was greeted by the daughter-in-law and her new baby at the house. The homeowners, both physicians, were out of town.
As a former pediatric nurse, I had much to share with this brand-new mother and adorable infant. We "bonded," and she confided in me. I discovered the seller had already purchased a home out of state and needed the proceeds, or they would lose that property. '
I was able to convince Lee to take a look. After seeing the house, he was worried because he could not find anything significant to object.
We made an offer, and it was accepted. After a few days, Lee said, 'What are you getting me into.?'' He was unsure, so I called and canceled the contract.
A few days later, he asked if I thought we were making a mistake by NOT buying. I called the owners back and asked to see the house again. I made another offer, even lower than before. The sellers were not happy, but they agreed. Guess I knew about negotiation and closing early on.
I've lived here for the past 47 years. The house has undergone many changes, and I still love this home.
When I go on a listing appointment, I share that I am in the same house and will not put myself through the stress you are about to undertake.
For me it is perfect!
