6 Tips for a pet-friendly house

Following are some tips for finding and setting up a pet-friendly home.

We love our pets so, naturally, we want them to be safe as well as comfortable. After all, they're family!

55 plus pet friendly homes boynton beach florida

If you're looking to buy a new home, the first thing to check is if the community or condo is pet friendly to your pet.  Will it accept your cat?  Will it accept your Goldendoodle or your two German Shepherds?

This is definitely your starting point.

Once you've narrowed down a community, check to see if there are veterinarians, groomers, pet stores, dog parks, dog beaches, whatever it is you may need within a reasonable distance.  You don't want to buy a home only to find out the closest vet is over an hour away.  That would be nightmare in an emergency.

Do you want a fenced yard?  Is it a high priority on your list?  If it is, does the house you're considering have a fence?  If it does not, will the homeowner's association (if there is one) allow you to install a fence?

It goes without saying they may tell you what color or type of fencing to use, but that's okay as long as one can be installed.

If you're looking at a condo, is there green space for you to walk Sophie or Brutus?  A nice dog-walking area with, hopefully, doggie-bag stations.

Puppy proof your home the same as you would childproof it for a baby or toddler.

Pets can get into all sorts of things, especially puppies, so it's best to put things away.  Think safety.  Things like medication, cleansers, and cleaning supplies which can be toxic need to be put away where pets can't get to them.

Certain plants are toxic to pets.  If you have indoor plants, please check they're not poisonous to pets.  Certain foods and candy are toxic to dogs.   Chocolate, grapes and more - the list goes on.   Please check and make sure your pets do not have access to any of these things.

Fragile pieces of china on coffee tables are definitely not for young pets.  Electrical cords should not be left loose and dangling.  Secure them so no one will trip.

Flooring may or may not be important to you.  It's definitely easier to clean tile than carpet, as far as accidents go, but it's harder for older pets to walk on.  They can't grip as well and tend to slide.

There are things you can do to help your senior pets.  Put down some throw rugs, doggie socks, and even little grippers that go over their nails.  Yoga mats work well in hallways too.  Flooring is something you can work around, unless you're building the house or gutting a property.  Then you can choose the type of flooring you want.

Lay out a personal space for your pet.  Set it up in your bedroom or wherever you feel they will be most comfortable.  Give your furry friend their own bed - yes, I know they probably sleep in yours, but even so.  Put some toys in there and some of their favorite things.  Make it so they know it's their space.  If they need time out or just want to take a nap and chill, they can go to their space.

Clean and vacuum.  Dog fur and hair gets everywhere, even onto the coils of your air conditioner.  Trust me on this one.  I know it well!   Clean as much as you can to keep your air conditioning running efficiently and have it cleaned when necessary.

Elyse immediately ‘got’ us

We found Elyse on-line after working with another realtor that was not helping us find what we wanted. Elyse immediately ‘got’ us and showed us the right properties while providing encyclopedic knowledge of neighborhoods, dog restrictions, lifestyle options and benefits/trade offs between one house/neighborhood and the other. Elyse consistently provided important information at every stage of our process. As out-of-towners this was essential to our making the right decision. We couldn’t be happier or more grateful to Elyse for everything she’s done. Elyse is a rare combination of being a true subject matter expert and, more importantly, a genuinely caring person who looks after her people.

Elyse, what a great list to prep your home for a pet.  I have hardwoods, and the cats go sliding all the time, lots of new scratches.

Joan, I believe that.  Hardwood is not used much in south Florida because of the weather.  I think because it causes it to contract and expand, but lookalike tile and laminates are.  I hope your kitties are okay.

A great list to make the furry family members more comfortable. Hardwood floors are tough on older pets and they do need help.

Thank you, Ed.  I think all floors are hard on older pets.  It's just hard for them to walk.  We don't see much hardwood in south Florida.  I believe it's because it contracts and expands, and with our weather that wouldn't work well.  We have plenty of hardwood lookalikes - tile, laminates, etc.

Elyse Berman, PA  all good advice, now I have a problem with our neighbors who have fences and think throwing out the dog is OK... we never put Holly out unless we are there to be with her.... just my  two cents Endre

Endre Barath, Jr. Is your neighbor leaving their dog outside and it's barking or are they throwing the dog over the fence?  I don't blame you for not leaving Holly out alone.  I wouldn't either.

Good morning, Elyse... fantastic tips and I loved your featured picture. It's been a long time since we had a puppy (24 years). Since that puppy we've always adopted a young adult dog, who have a harder time being adopted than an adorable puppy. (Same with our cats.)

Good morning Nina,

Thank you.  The pictures are from Canva.  Same with me.  I haven't had a puppy in 17 years.  My dogs have come either as young adults or, in the case of Corrie, she was 8.5 when she came.  She had no problem but the younger one was tough.

Yes indeed - these are great tips. Having a pet friendly home is similar to a child friendly home! Dangers have to be removed.

Hi Kat,  Thanks.  Yes, exactly.  All dangers have to be moved higher and higher, as I recall.

Elyse, they put their two dogs out in the back or front yard, and they prefer to be inside, so they bark ...... and when they hear me or Holly going out they become more territorial and bark more.... no they do not throw them over the fence but might as well since they are not home all day:)Endre

Endre,  Isn't it amazing.  We have one that locks his on his front patio when he leaves for work.  Barks like crazy too.  I don't know why they have dogs.

My new kitty Zeus is a trouble maker, so these pet-proofing rules could have been written for him. He has broken several ceramic flower pots and vases, and he has knocked over at least two table lamps. Yoga mats are great in the hallway and under the litter box. They are easy to clean and cost less than the mats made for this purpose. Instead of baby proofing, you'll probably need to pet proof your home. Great tips!
