Water Restrictions for Aurora, Co.

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with Hamm Homes
Water restrictions start May 1

Aurora’s reservoirs are well below their normal levels, so beginning May 1, drought restrictions will be in place. This year, customers may water no more than two days a week. As always, watering is prohibited between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. from May 1 through Sept. 30.

Aurora Water’s drought watering guidelines will arrive in the mail by the first week of May. Customers may find it useful to tear off the watering schedule and place it near their irrigation clocks to easily reprogram the systems each month. Aurora Water has a goal of reducing outdoor water use by 20%. For more information about watering times, go to AuroraGov.org/WateringTimes.

Drought surcharges of $1.95 per thousand gallons will be in effect for some customers based on their water usage. These surcharges begin in rate tier II for residential customers and usage above 110% of the water quarter average for commercial and multifamily customers. The winter quarter average represents indoor use based on December, January and February usage and is also used to calculate sewer charges. The winter quarter average can be found under “Sewer Usage Chg” on your water bill.

If customers reduce their outdoor water use, their bill should be about the same as last year’s. Surcharges incentivize water savings while allowing us to cover our normal operational costs. This also provides revenue for leasing water to help our reservoirs recover and prevent future water shortages. For more information on the drought, visit AuroraGov.org/Drought.

Wow, I am surprised you have a drought, when California has been awash with rains and all that snow I thought you would have been fine. Always something surprising to learn every day. At least your water authority has a practical approach to the problem.

It always boggles my mind a bit when I hear about water shortages since the Earth is 75% water, haha.

This is good information to share with area residents.

We have a rainy day in Maryland and no water restrictions.
