What are you afraid of?

By

My morning routine is pretty simple. I get up, turn on the coffee, feed the dog, scan the national news on my tablet, shower and head to the office or somewhere. When I was scanning the news this morning I heard the exact same statement twice. The commercials said, "You don't need to be afraid . . ."

That made me wonder. Why would multiple commercials for different products use that line? Are we a nation that is becoming afraid? Or, has the marketing industry seized upon an undercurrent of concern that is in our national psyche? Politicians use fear to get your vote. One side swears the other side is going to take your Medicare, and the other side says the other guys are going to take more taxes. "Vote for me and I will protect you!" It's marketing, and in the political scene it's buffalo biscuits designed to control you. It's fear.

Fear can be a great motivator. This morning, I watched a surveillance video of a pharmacist pepper spray a robber.  The small female pharmacists took out the would-be robber and put him in the hospital because of the bear repellent pepper spray she used against him. Good for her. She should have banged him on the head in the process.

In a CE seminar last week, the speaker went around the room and asked the group what they are afraid of. They had interesting answers. Ironically, I couldn't think of anything. I guess my life today is pretty calm compared to years gone by. Fear isn't a word you'll hear in my conversations very often.

Fear can paralyze you, or fear can motivate you. What you do with it will determine how it affects you. It can make you cautious. Or, it can make you bold. Watch a mother when her child is in danger. Suddenly, she has supernatural strength and courage. She will go through fire to rescue her child in distress.

Fear can awaken your senses and make you alert, or it can make you make you cower and hide. The commercial is correct. You don't need to Fear can paralyze you, or fear can motivate you.be afraid, but you do need to assess the source of the fear and determine if it is something you are willing to confront.

Starting a new business might cause one type of fear.  Jumping off a bridge with a bungee cord attached to your ankle generates another type of fear. When you have determined the source of the fear, you can determine your response. You don't need to be afraid.

Margaret, I've lived long enough that all the major reasons to fear are behind me. The only thing I could think of was losing my loved ones, but I don't ponder that ever.

Good for you, Beth! I've seen too many talented people bury their talent because they feared failure. Sad, sad, sad.

I think you are on to something with the idea the Marketing Industrial Complex has grabbed onto the psyche of the country to promote goods.  And, you are right, fear can be paralyzing if not managed properly.  I wish marketing would help guide us out of our current state, rather than capitalize on it.

Hi Mike- I probably fear most what you mentioned...losing my loved ones. Oh, I'm not overly fond of snakes but it doesn't prevent me from doing what I want to do.

As always, an interesting post from you! Fear can be debilitating if we let it be. The only way to get past it is to address it head on. For example I used to be very afraid of speaking in public, public meaning more than about 4 people. After a lot of work and time addressing those fears, I can now do it, and I'm only nervous before I start speaking, and for the first 15 seconds or so. I enjoy it once I get going.

As for what I'm afraid of now, I'm still afraid of heights (aka falling) and while I've gotten a little better, I still won't get on a roof or stand on top of a telephone pole ala Anna Banana Kruchten Phoenix Broker. And I'm not really trying to get past that.

This is a great subject of fear that I feel has been interjected into our brains by commercials, by watching attacks on people shopping or just walking down the street. The fear mongering has to stop.

Good morning Mike. The word fear evokes two thoughts. One, everything you want is on the other side of fear. Two, FEAR - false evidence appearing real. Enjoy your day.

Fear can motivate but is not a place where we need to stay.

Hi Mike,

This is a great topic to discuss and you do an excellent job of assessing the different types of fear.  However...

If someone tries to use fear to motivate me, they are barking up the wrong tree.

Good morning Mike,

Thank you for your post as I like Myrl Jeffcoat think fear can be paralyzing if not managed properly. I feel the Marketing Industrial Complex has grabbed onto the psyche of the country to promote goods and are doing great harm by promoting fear. The fear mongering has definitely crept into our society in so many aspects of our lives and needs to stop! Promoting fear to me does not work!

First your disclaimer is truly priceless. Second yes fear is what others use to motivate others to buy into their spiel. Living here in the desert, I am not fearful of rattle snakes but I am aware of them. There is a difference between fear and awareness. Years ago I heard this acronym for FEAR - False Evidence Appearing Real.

Fear can paralyze people and cause hasty decisions. Many marketing people use that fear as a way of getting sales.

GREAT POST and congrats on the feature. This is an interesting topic of discussion that can invoke  a lot of stories.  Fear of failure, fear of success even.  Overcoming fear can be a great motivator for sure!

Fear of failure--that's a common feeling.  Or fear of getting hurt--two very different things!  Regarding business--gotta try and usually, failure teaches you a lesson!

Assuming the Presidency at the depth of the Great Depression, Franklin D. Roosevelt helped the American people regain faith in themselves. He brought hope as he promised prompt, vigorous action, and asserted in his Inaugural Address, “the only thing we have to fear is fear itself.”

Last month, someone asked what scares me . . . I thought . . . and thought . . . and thought . . . then I replied "Nothing".

They said not death? No, that is one of the few guarantees in life.

Not snakes? No, I just try to have common sense to avoid the poisonous ones.

Not fear of failure? Heck no, I am a master of that! If you don't fail once in a while, you aren't trying hard enough!
