I read Kathy Streib's blog today, "Friday Fun." "Today is "Pay It Forward Day". Kathy asked us to share the first thing that comes into our mind with an act of kindness that we personally experienced from someone. I encourage you to check it out if you haven't already.
As with most blogs, they can have us thinking about other things. I remembered a couple of recent events that brought much joy to an aching heart. I have not been touched in such a way in a very long time. Kathy also shared with us a graphic, "Think Positive." which led me to this.
Don't Worry, Be Happy!
"Don't worry, Be Happy...". Well, I remember someone telling me that statement when things were not going well, and it always brought a smile and a change of demeanor.
Many of us have had to manage operations or departments, etc.
Using The HEART Principles in Real Estate
As a REALTOR®, part of our job is to negotiate with either a buyer or seller agent on behalf of our customer, and sometimes those negotiations can be very difficult.
I recalled how we have to dig down to that particular place deep within our hearts and find a way to reassure our customers that we will get through the process even when we have to deal with that "stinky" person. After all, it is always about our clients, never about us.
The principles I use to help me find the goodness in that "stinky" person are from the book "Managing From The Heart" (Dell Trade Paperback 1990).
These five principles are as follows:
- Hear and understand me.
- Even if you disagree, please don't make me wrong.
- Acknowledge the greatness within me.
- Remember to look for my loving intentions.
- Tell me the truth with compassion.
These five principles were illustrated well in story form, making reading enjoyable. But more to the point, I can always find one (or more) that fits just about any situation where I need to tread lightly or have a deeper understanding.
My Takeaway
I have found, especially during negotiations, to remain calm, take a step back and always act with my client's best interests in mind. This approach has not let me down yet, and most of all, the process remains transparent to, you guessed it, the client.
I collect heart-shaped rocks. I place them in purposeful locations throughout my yard.
