Sweet Sauce Pizza From Franzone’s – Bridgeport, Montgomery County, PA

When I was young I never knew any other pizza then the pizzas made at DeJohn’s/Franzone’s Pizzeria.  DeJohn’s was the original pizza shop located on the corner of DeKalb and 4th Streets in Bridgeport.

Franzones PizzaThat location had a wonderful visual...the pie maker’s work station was front and center in the large corner windows, overlooking the busy Routes 202 and 23. I can still see the dough being thrown in the air by the pie maker! Such advertising!

Sometime in my youth that corner location was demolished because of the planning of a major highway in the area. And that pizza shop moved up a block and across the street, where the laundromat was, with a new name, Franzone’s. I do not know the details of why the name changed, but all I know is that pizza shop was a block closer to my home!

As time passed and I moved from the area, I realized a sweet sauce pizza is not a common thing.  Actually I have never had that style hot pizza anywhere else. The best tomato pies I’ve had are made with a sweet sauce also, but that’s another story.

Fortunate for me, I manage to get back to my hometown at least once a year when I visit my parents’ graves and to share a pizza with my sister, who also enjoys this wonderful taste from our past.

If you are ever near Bridgeport, Montgomery County, say on your way to the King of Prussia Mall, treat yourself to a pizza at Franzone’s. And be sure to have a glass of birch beer to get the full local taste!

Diane & I love a good thin crust pizza. Having lived in Boston getting Italian great pizzas.... we lucked out a fellow Bostonian moved to Los Angeles and became a huge hit and has now about five pizza places in the greater Los Angeles area.... he is such a perfectionist figured out that the water makes a difference.... he used to get water from Boston... but now that he can afford it he ships water from Italy for making the best pizza:)Endre

I’m always back-and-forth with the whole best pizza conversation, and especially being in New York, it really can’t escape me. :

Good morning Gloria. Growing up in Chicago with seemingly a pizza joint on every corner, I figured it out early in life. The very best pizza its the pizza you like the best. Enjoy your slice!

Good morning, Gloria... I've never heard of a sweet sauce pizza (and I grew up in New York City where pizza reigned!). Now I'm anxious to try it.

I do recall a pizza place named Zaccary's that also had a store front making area. The memories are still there even though the store is gone.

Endre Barath, Jr. Thin crust yummy!  Wow that is interesting about the water!   I hear talk of that about hoagie/cheese steak rolls made outside the Philly area.  People always say it is the water!💧

Ed Silva The memory I have the most about the pizza throwing is on a rainy day with steamed up windows.  I was fascinated by the throwing as a young child.
