Monday motivation - get reading!

Today's message is from one of my favorite philosophers: Dr. Seuss!

"The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go."
Dr. Seuss

I read a lot, but will admit that most of it is not educational. I love to read "who dunnits." But the keep reading! funny thing is, I learn a lot even from them.

So I say "Read what you love to read. You'll always learn something, even if it's mere trivia."

And then, between books read purely for pleasure, read something deliberately educational.

Wishing you a joyful and prosperous week,

Marte

Good evening Marte,

I'm with you! I love to read and always have a book going. Sometimes I read 15 minutes before going to sleep and always have to read before falling to sleep. I love the Dr. Seuss quote...always been a favorite of mine.

Dorie Dillard Austin TX - I almost always have to wake up to turn off the light - I fall asleep reading nearly every night.

Doctor Seuss imparted a whole lot of wisdom to generations of children - without them even noticing! I love him.

Hi Marte- when my nieces were younger I encouraged them to read. I said it would be nice if what they were reading was educational but the important thing was to read and make it a habit to read every day!  I always have a book or two on my Kindle app on my phone so no matter where I am I have something to read. And...I too love who-done-its.

Kathy Streib - going anywhere with my husband means being there early and sitting waiting. So I never go anywhere without a book on my tablet.

I have never been much of a reader, most books don't keep my attention for very long, probably because my attention span is very short, haha.

Brian England Perhaps you've simply never come across a book (or magazine) about a subject that really interests you.

I read Falling by TJ Newman because she is a friend of mine and I was surprised at how well the book kept my attention throughout.  I am looking forward to her next book, Drowning, which comes out on May 30th Marte Cliff

Kat Palmiotti Reading all the time runs in my family. My Mom said she had memories of her Grandmother sitting at the butter churn - with the churn handle in one hand and a book in the other. So - I was raised on reading and have never stopped. Neither have my sons.

Hi Marte... you don't need to twist my arm to read... I love to read. Always have a book with me. The biggest problem is finding more time to read.

Nina Hollander, Broker - Yes, I have to discipline myself to get back to work when there's a good book waiting! I'm not as bad as my firstborn... you can be talking with him and realize he's drifted off - he saw something to read!

I love to read BOOKS especially historical and historical fiction.

I tried the kindle and I couldn't stand reading that way.

faye schubert I have always preferred real books too, but lately do most of my book reading on my tablet - just because it's easier than driving to the library. We're almost into the season now where I can attend yard sales and bring home books! I read far too many to pay book store prices for fiction.

Good morning Mate. The more you read and know the more you realize how much you do not know. The journey for knowledge should never end. Enjoy your day.

Wayne Martin Even what my son refers to as my "storybooks" teach me things. This week my book has made me interested in the assassination of Lincoln. I don't believe the history books I read all those years ago in school said a darn thing about a conspiracy or the other people who were attacked that night.

I love this post!   i love reading gentle English cottage mysteries - the ones with the body under the rose bush and the suggestion to call Poirot or Miss Marple - a "gentle" death of arsenic - the dr. did it or the postmistress - nothing violent (despite the murder!)

Lise Howe I also enjoy what they call "cozy mysteries." It's always best when the dead body belongs to a total stranger in town or to someone despicable! I like the ones where the body has been found and now it's up to our heroes and heroines to find out "who dunnit."

Although I get news of all kinds on my phone throughout the day, I still like to read the New York Times in paper form every morning.  Ditto the Carmel Pine Cone, our FREE local paper.

Hella M. Rothwell, Broker/Realtor®

I agree, The Monterey Herald gets delivered here but it's national and international news is bits and pieces from what's in the New York Times.  Now I get the full story and more.  The Pine Cone is in kiosks here for locals and visitors to pick up.  A huge section is for Real Estate.

Hella M. Rothwell, Broker/Realtor® I wish we still had newspaper delivery here, but it went away a few years ago. It's not surprising that they had too few subscribers to come clear out into the woods any more - as they fired more and more columnists there was less and less to read every day. AND - the "reporting" became more and more biased.

I'm not even sure if they still have a print edition.

Love this post!  Simple, powerful message.  I love to read who done it posts, too!  Since I fly about every other month visiting my daughters, I save up a lot of industry reading for those flights.  No interruptions and if I finish before my return flight, I have a bonus book waiting in my bag.  Works very well at getting required reading completed.

Very nice info, Marte. Now that you mention it, there were a few books I've read over the years that were very enjoyable! This was before the internet. I do have a few books on hand that I want to read. I'm going to make an effort to spend some time daily, knocking them out.

Thanks!!

Marte, great advice! My father taught all of his six children to read when we were three-year-olds. That’s what I call good parenting. Now I’m in a terrific book group that’s helping me enjoy all kinds of stuff - in addition to the romance novels set in Paris

I agree - I'm always reading something. Recently, I've been listening to audiobooks so I can get through twice as much!

My kids often ask me, "How did you know that?"  My answer is always, "I read it in a book."
