When the ugly duckling becomes a swan!

Working on a project now that is bringing back memories...

Current project is a 1980's vintage ranch, estate sale, inhabited by smokers and dogs with less than perfect potty training.

On a spectacular 2.25 acre home site, with towering oaks and views across neighboring farms.

With time and money (and the right contractor), the home will be transformed into a place worthy of the land.

About 10 years ago, one of my clients embarked on a similar venture. When we first encountered it, the home has been on the market for more than a year, with multiple price reductions.

What made the project intriguing, however, was the setting: 25 pastoral acres with a gorgeous spring fed pond. That ugly duckling home was on the absolute best building site, overlooking the pond.

My client had the vision and the budget to turn the home into a show-stopper. Removing the upper level allowed soaring ceilings in the great room, and adding commercial grade picture windows unleashed spectacular water views. An addition created space for a lakeside master suite and office.

The lead photo above tells you all you need to know about how an ugly duckling became a swan. Enjoy more photos of the finished product:

The bath room is very spacious. I was wondering if it is meant for showers looking outside and allow outside visitors peak through these huge windows.  A waste of space for someone use it for a few minutes in a day.

The beauty of living on 25 very private acres with a gated entrance - you have the luxury of designing a home where the "outside comes in" without the fear of peeping Toms.  Also - the windows were treated to allow unobstructed view looking out, but masking the view into the home from outside.

I'd love the 25 acres, but have to agree with Sam.  I spend 20 minutes in the bathroom, I would never dedicate that kind of space.  We had to modify our custom build to take room from the primary bath and add it to the bedroom and closet  because it was crazy big and not for us.
