What an Exciting Weekend It was! Did a Twister Touch Down in Willis, TX.?
There was nothing on the local news, or any other news stations, however, I have a first hand account!
It was Sunday afternoon and a storm - or at least light rain had rolled in. There was nothing showing on the radar except the typical lightning and rain storms. We were anxiously getting ready to have lunch with my parents when the strangest noise was coming from outside. We didn't know if it was a transformer, or the air conditioner. It sounded like a humming sound and swishing. It is hard to describe. I kept hearing the sound, then asked my husband if he would look at his weather app to see if there were any warnings. There was nothing, so of course we thought nothing of it. There have been having so many storms lately, we thought surely if there was any type of tornado warning, we would have been told about it. Anyway, my husband went outside to investigate. I didn't know where he went, but shortly after going outside, I heard a loud snap & crack. The next thing I know, 4 large trees had fallen into the driveway. I immediately run outside calling for him, with no answer. I screamed for him, then that's when I realized, he was on the opposite side of the house. Thankfully, uninjured. He had gone out to see if it was something to do with our power line because the electricity had been coming off and on.
We were thinking due to the wind, and 2 of the trees being dead, this is what caused the trees to come down. It wasn't until we were talking with neighbors later, that we realized it was a small twister. Three of the trees twisted and broke off. Neighbors from several streets over were hearing the same noise we heard. They also thought it was something to do with the power coming to our house.
It was an interesting day and a little too much excitement for my taste. The trees blocked our entire driveway!
A couple of these trees were over 60 feet tall!
A beautiful surprise came out of all of this though. As we were inside contemplating what to do, a neighbor knocked on the door. She said, we are here to help. To our surprise, when walking outside, there they all were. Four men with chainsaws, and one on a tractor. What a blessing to have such great neighbors. They said, we had to come and help. I am so thankful to live in such a beautiful place, and so blessed to have neighbors like this.
We still have a lot of clean up to do, but at least they helped us clear the debris from the driveway. I always thought a tornado would sound like a train, but that is not the case at all. If you hear a strange sound during a storm, trust your instinct. It could be a tornado. Stay inside, until it passes. It is probably not the best idea to go outside and investigate.
Again, we cannot thank our neighbors enough. It would have taken us a while to get this to this point. My parents, who live one street over, have a tractor we could have borrowed. We were going to wait to do that just due to how overwhelming the entire situation was. We are thankful the neighbors stepped in and helped. It has rained all week and it would have been impossible to get a tractor through this any later in the week!
