Things you Never thought to Clean around the House

Keeping a house clean and tidy can and usually is a never-ending chore!   No matter how much you dust, vacuum, sweep/dust, it usually doesn't last long before it needs to be repeated.    Here are a few areas of your home that can go overlooked.

The Bathroom

The walls need attention after a while with hot steamy showers.   Use a microfiber cloth or soft sponge to thoroughly wipe down the walls.

The shower curtain will last longer if you throw it in the washing machine on a regular basis.    You can clean it by itself with detergent and if it needs more attention, add a cup of baking soda to the water.   Wash on gentle, and add white vinegar during the rinse cycle.   Hang the curtain to dry.  (be sure it is machine washable)

The Kitchen

The coffeemaker is usually the most overlooked item and definitely needs cleaning.   This depends on what type of coffee maker you have, but should all be cleaned once a month for everyday drinkers.   If you use a grinder for the coffee, this needs to be included.

Garbage Disposal Splash Guard may be the source of some unwanted smells.   A soapy scrub sponge should do the trick to remove the gunk from the folds and grooves.   (BE SURE to unplug it before cleaning!)

The dishwasher filter needs a good hot water rinse and a good idea to use a toothbrush to gently scrub the mesh screen and plastic to remove any residue.

How often do you see crumbs in the silverware drawer?    They find their way in, and on occasion, you need a quick wipe down of this drawer.

Around the House

The doorknobs, light switches, handrails, cabinet handles, and TV (and remotes) need to be wiped down with disinfectant wipes or antibacterial cleaner.

Now that we are using reusable shopping bags, these bags can quickly become the perfect environment for bacteria.   Hand wash fabric bags in warm water w/soap or laundry detergent, then hang them to dry.   Disinfecting wipes are also a good choice.

SO, turn on your favorite energy-boosting playlist, and get cleaning!

Hi Joan... I have an excellent housekeeper and she totally stays on top of all these things and more. I clean my coffee machine, my dishwasher, my disposal, and my washing machine each and every month without fail.

Hi Joan- these are all important areas that are often forgotten. I do use the reuseable shopping bags and toss them in the washing machine after a trip to the store.

Joan Cox - thank you for all these tips and reminders - I never thought about bacteria in the reusable bags and it makes good sense to give them a wash - Kathy Streib I’m so glad to know these bags can go in the washer.

Also important to clean between the sink and the backsplash.  Our coffee maker lets us know when to clean it. Also we use the old fashioned ice cub trays and I wash them with soap and water once a month. The challenge is out here in the high desert the dust is everywhere and one must learn not to become obsessive compulsive about the dust. Dust the furniture and in 30 minutes the dust is back.

Leanne Smith I have found a mess between the stove and the cabinets where food has slipped down, and made a mess.    I don't think I would like that much dust!

In life we exchange one issue for another. Back in the Midwest our dust was oil from all the pollution. Here is it is just dust.  The lovely sunsets over the mountains, the early morning coffees on the veranda are for me worth the dust.

I like the reminder to put on a playlist.  It does seem more fun when you're bopping along to a favorite tune!

Great tips Joan! I am the main coffee drinker and I do clean it on a regular basis. I never think to wipe down the bathroom walls though. I'll have to do this. The playlist helps for sure!

All good reminders for keeping things clean.  My pet peeve?  Ceiling Fans ... they are dust collectors.  We should give it a good dusting at least once a month!

Diana Dahlberg I only use mine in the summer, so sure they are very dusty.

We use ours year-round as we like the air circulation in our bedroom -- especially while sleeping.
