Friday Fun…Who Are the Ones You Remember?

Though Teacher Appreciation Week concludes today, many would agree that teachers deserve our gratitude daily for what they do. After all, it is in their hands that we place the care and education of our children.

A quote by Andy Rooney that I shared this week made me think about some of the teachers I’ve had whom I have not forgotten and who made an impression on how I live my life.

Most of us end up with no more than five or six people who remember us. Teachers have thousands of people who remember them for the rest of their lives. Andy Rooney

My 7th grade English teacher asked us to reread Tom Sawyer when we turned 21. She pointed out that like many other things in our life, age and experience often offers us a different perspective of how we view things.

I remembered that, and actually did reread Tom Sawyer and some of the other books I read as a child once I hit adulthood.

So, share with us…is there a teacher who left an impression on you?

I do remember a few teachers, because they were unique. For example, there was an English teacher in high school who would come dressed up as the character we were studying or he'd bring in some sort of props. And the husband/wife in middle school who both taught different subjects to the same kids (plus she had really long red hair-who could forget that?).

Kat Palmiotti I loved that your English teacher dressed up as a character in a book or bring a prop!!!   I wonder if any teachers do that now??

Good morning Kathy. One teacher had the greatest influence on my life, Joe Taskonis, a history teacher, debate coach and wrestling coach. He was one of a kind! Enjoy your day.

Hello Kathy - as I attempt to keep my memory sharp (or less dull) I have long practiced recalling people and places (plus all sorts of stuff) from my past.  There are still vivid clues from elementary school and even junior high.  It becomes fuzzier starting in tenth grade and much less clear beyond that as all sorts of things battled for attention.  That exercise continues. . .

I do that as well Michael Jacobs I will never forget my Art History professor in college and one of my professors in grad school.  If I close my eyes, I can picture my kindergarten teacher too.

My English teacher in  high school left a strong impression with me.

And, I should thank my typing teacher for the typing skills before going to college. Those were the days before computers.

Roy Kelley maybe your English teacher was who helped to inspire you to read all te books that you do. And I'm glad I took typing as well. I don't think I could have afforded to pay someone to type all of my college papers.

A second grade teacher showed more kindness to a poor, little girl who didn't realize that her hair was ratty, brushing and putting it into two little pony tails every morning with two pieces of green yarn. As long as I brought the pieces back and showed up early, she did this small gesture and it is a lasting memory of someone who truly cared.

Thanks for the question, Kathy!

Good morning, Kathy... I remember a number of my teachers. There was Miss Meyers in 1st and 2nd grade... beloved by all the kids. Sadly, she died in her 20's from Leukemia (not much they could do for it in the 1950's). There was Mrs. Hagelin in 4th grade (I skipped 3rd grade) who taught me grammar, spelling, and multiplication tables. There was Professor Yuri Olkhovsky at George Washington University, who was a professor of Russian studies and culture, and mentor and who was responsible for my job at the US Information Agency and the NSA.

Nina Hollander, Broker you have had one interesting life, my friend!!! I just remembered Mr. Gillingham who on very hot and humid days (keep in mind, our schools weren't air conditioned back then) would let us go to the water fountain  in the hall with our shoes off just to cool off.

Kathy Streib hi Kathy... somehow, I don't think of it as an interesting life... it's just my life! I never experienced air conditioning until I went to university in Washington, DC in 1966... dorms and classrooms were air conditioned given the heat and humidity in DC.

Hello Kathy,  I know of my first grade teacher I hate to remember, she said I will never be as good as my brother.  That is what I remember all the time, well I out starter her in the long run.  Now my 6 grade teacher was the best.  on a nice day, he would take us out of the class room and we go and sit on the class for some reading time.

I remember many great teachers.  Grade school Sister Ann Lorete, she taught me how important it was to do things with excellence. In high school I had several that I recall one was my economics teacher that made it clear the girls needed to learn and understand economics and that's what he did, the other was my coach and mentor for basket ball, volley ball and tennis and the other was  a really cool Nun that seemed like she was 80 at the time but she taught me to sew like a pro.  I kicked and screamed even taking that class but my Dad said - if you take that you don't have to take home ec.  That turned out to be a really good choice.  Such a neat lady.

Kathy, I remember so many teachers. I have a late birthday and was by far the youngest kid in my class growing up. I remember my first grade teacher Mrs. Chatwell. I struggled a bit with reading. She took an interest in me and when school ended she came to my house with a large paper sack of books so I could practice reading over the summer. I remember reading all summer long and loved it. I don't recall struggling with reading ever again and became an avid reader.

There are so many teachers I could mention. People underestimate the influence and importance a teacher has on their children. I'm genuinely concerned with where our education system is going. Great teachers are leaving the profession left and right. We need to pay teachers better, give them the resources they need, get back to teaching good curriculum, and structure the classes so teachers can spend more time on teaching and less on behavior issues. Part of the solution lies within our school board and government and part lies with parents.

It was a teacher that recued me from homelessness when I was 17 years old. I have 2 teachers in my family and my charitable causes are dedicated to local teachers through Donor's Choose and of course others that support Veterans. Great post Kathy Streib it warmed my heart because teachers are near & dear to me.

Hi Kathy Streib,

I still use the skills today that I learned in 5th grade in English class. Of course, this was the Houston area.  I even remember diagramming sentences.  I never realized how much I would depend on the writing skills we use on a daily basis.
