With all of the information on blogging I read , I am even more confused on which direction to take. Not having either a personal blog or website at this time I want to make a choice and could use some advice. Does one product have an advantage over the other? Also I would like to enlist the help of a professional in web design and optimization, what should I expect to spend?

Hello Bob Happy Holiday weekend I suggest doing both well I mean since you already have your active rain blog which comes with an out side blog I suggest you to go ahead and work on the website Im not too sure about how much that stuff cost but I do strongly believe in having a strong Internet presence. I hope that I helped out a bit.
