Time to weed out the "newbee" Realtors.

By
Real Estate Agent with RE/MAX Premier Associates

Over the past few years a lot of people have gone out and gotten their Real Estate License because they saw the big boom and thought to themselves, "Wow, it is easy to make money in real estate. I got tired with how many times people told me that their sister or mother or girlfriend just got their license and was going to list their home for them. I explained to them of the downside with using an inexperienced agent and fortunately I was able to convince some of them. I am not saying anything bad about people who get their license to work part-time, but I definitely would not use a part-time Doctor, Attorney or any other important profession. To most people buying a home is the biggest investment they will ever make in their lives. A full time professional Realtor in my opinion is the only person I would ever use.

Well, now the times have changed and those people are either already out of the business or not making any money at all. Real Estate is definitely not a part-time business. The market changes daily and if you aren't working in it full time you will never make any money in it. You will also be doing a disservice to your customer.

Not to be mean, but to all the people that are out of the business I say, Ce la vie, sianara, good luck and good bye. Oh and please don't forget to biggie size that order for me.

So TRUE We are going to see a lot of agents get out of the business. They have never experienced a market like the one we are in. I can't wait to get rid of the discounters. They have been bad for the business. But you will be able to visit them when you biggie size your order

I don't have a problem with newbies.  I was one once too.  I was lucky to figure out how this works fairly quickly with the help of some more experienced mentors.

I am all for raising professional standards: increased training requirements, minimum production standards, and the such, but I would never want their to be any restrictions against newbies getting started.

If you are a newbie and are a better Realtor than an experienced agent then you are doing all the right things. Those kind of newbees are good for our profession. But those weren't the newbees I was speaking about.

Carlos,  All newbies aren't bad.  Some are focused and determined to make a career out of this business.  We certainly need new blood in the this business.  The average age of Realtor is what 50 something?  We aren't going to be around forever....

I think you mean we need to get rid of the "part-timers and losers" (Dave Liniger founder of RE/MAX used this term first).  I agree with that.

We need to establish a higher standard within our industry.  One that take more effort to get than funds.  Every other industry has standards, why not REALTORS????

I am also fairly new in the business but I too don't like the thought of people just doing it part time

As our markets correct this too will correct the overpopulation of agents. Professionals are in for the long run as they see this as their business.

Tough markets will tighten up sales.  New and old with both begin to disappear.

"I explained to them of the downside with using an inexperienced agent and fortunately I was able to convince some of them." I thought we were all inexperienced at one point in our real estate career. Did you forget that you was a "newbie" when you started.

"Oh and please don't forget to biggie size that order for me."  Please don't forget that there are many professional people in other lines of work, not just in real estate. I have been a restaurant manager for the last 13 years and have made very good money doing it (made 6 figures last year). So please don't insinuate that just because I work in the restaurant industry I am not a professional or that I am subservient to you.

"The market changes daily and if you aren't working in it full time you will never make any money in it. You will also be doing a disservice to your customer." Unfortunately not everyone has financial reserves to go into real estate full time. I am divorced and also have two children I support so I do need some assurance that my bills will be met. I do agree that there are "losers" who play as real estate agents. There are "losers" in the restaurant industry who play as real managers. Please don't group all "part-time newbies" as "losers". Am I doing a disservice to my customer when I work at the restaurant till 11:30pm and I run a CMA report at 1:30am and meet with him at 7:30am before the customer goes to work? I hope not.
