Education & Training with First Response Resolution, LLC

Welcome to First Response Resolution, LLC’s official blog! We are a specialty tax firm practicing right here near Medford in Southern Oregon. The focus of my practice is solving tax problems for individuals and businesses, IRS Representation of taxpayers, and representing taxpayers before their individual State Departments of Revenue. These services are referred to in many ways such as Tax Problem Resolution, Tax Relief Services, Tax Resolution, IRS Resolution, Tax Controversy, etc. Think of our firm as your Financial First Responders who specialize in saving troubled taxpayers. We help people who are struggling with tax problems get their lives back on track so they can focus on what matters most to them.

This blog post is focused on the upcoming IRS Collection Enforcement. It has now been widely reported that IRS Commissioner Amalia Colbert and Deputy Commissioner Darren Guillot have informed the tax practitioner community that automated enforcement notices are being implemented again. The IRS had paused automated collection notices during the pandemic and have been on hold since February 2022. The IRS now has reported that they have caught up on the backlog of mail processing and will resume sending out collection notices starting Memorial Day Weekend 2023.

According to their update to the American Bar Association’s Tax Sections Subcommittees, there are approximately 8 million CP-14 Notices that are about to be sent out to taxpayers who owe the IRS and have not paid their liability. In addition, the IRS will also likely be sending out a friendly reminder notice to those taxpayers who already knew they owed the IRS before the Covid 19 Pandemic but still have not paid. Those taxpayers who have already been previously informed about their unpaid tax liabilities will only get one reminder before the IRS proceeds to Levy their assets. NOW is the time to address back taxes owed and issues regarding tax years that were not filed but should have been. It is NOT in your best interest to wait until the government decides to address filing your tax returns for you, they will not be concerned with including the deductions you would otherwise be entitled to if you had properly filed your tax returns yourself.

When the IRS has identified taxpayers who had filing requirements but have not filed, they create tax returns on the taxpayer’s behalf called Substitute for Returns. If the IRS has already gone and filed tax returns for you and has sent Collection Notices, give us a call as soon as you can. We will evaluate the circumstances and strategize to reduce penalties and interest, challenge incorrect assessments, and determine the best options available to you to resolve your tax liabilities. Once the wave of IRS Collection Notices go out to the more than 8 million taxpayers in a few weeks, the tax resolution community including the IRS Collections and Appeals divisions, will be slammed. Take advantage of this small window of opportunity to get your case worked before significantly long wait times become a reality. The IRS will be sending out notices in waves to attempt to avoid overwhelming their resources, but they will certainly be busy once they resume enforcement.

The IRS and taxes in general can be complicated and intimidating. If you have received IRS Notices regarding back taxes owed and are facing potential Tax Liens and Levies, it is well advised to seek competent representation when dealing with the IRS. Most people would not go to court and face litigation without an attorney, and it is in your best interest to engage a qualified representative to deal with the IRS on your behalf.
