Porch Posh You Don't Have to Wash

By

Here's an idea for a porch!

We stage low-cost "rental beach houses"  for sale, and they are terribly lacking in exterior charm. Between the College-age renter's shenannigans and the super-destructo elements, nice stuff outside doesn't stand a chance.

We've taken to doing something really un-stagey...adding a "painted rug" to the sitting areas of rental porches. We do them in colors that pull from the overall color scheme.

It makes the listing cute and memorable, in a sea of beach cabins that all look the same and have minimal amenities.

I have seen this done and it is quite nice. Now with regard to staging I don't mind the rug as much as I mind the furniture placement. Angling the loveseat in the far right corner and flanking with 2 chairs and coffee table would have made the space much more inviting and less long and narrow appearing.

The other 2 chairs could have been set up on the opposite side of the porch (if there was room). But all in all it looks okay

Yes, Phyllis, that porch arrangement looks really outta whack. I didn't stage this. It is a part of a plan I gave to a rental. I've never seen it in person.

That is too cute, did you free hand it or use a stencil?

Michelle: Very cute idea to paint the rug on the floor. I have seen this done in interiors, but never on a porch. Thanks for posting it.

I like the idea of outdoor area rugs; I especially like painting a rug or design on the backside of a remnant piece of vinyl and sealing with a coat of polyurethane.

What a great and creative idea.  I'm not very good at painting, would have to hire someone.

Michelle, I have seen painted rugs but not painted porches. A wonderful idea; never have to worry about "losing" or replacing them.... how perfect for a rental or vacation place.

What a creative idea for a painted porch!  I've seen these in magazines and always like the idea.  The colors used in the picture work well with the colors of the house.

Love the painted rug idea - I imagine it would work on a deck too that's seen better days.

That looks like a good idea to me...definitely something different...but, will it peel when you try to clean it??

I thought this such a clever idea that I saved the link to it.

it's a great idea also for rentals or vacation homes because you may not want to leave a rug unattended for months.  If it rains and the rug gets soaked it could rot wooden floors.

Love this idea!  I will certainly keep in mind for the next porch I am lucky enough to stage!

Thanks all!

I prefer Benjamin Moore's oil-based paint designed to be walked on... known as M22. It's shiny, but it lasts and lasts.

And yes, you can wash it. Soap and water and a scrub brush when needed.

And if you use a good primer, such as Benjamin Moore's Fresh Start, it will not peel.

Tape it off and it's easy-cheesy-Japanesy!

Michelle, I love this idea also.. Like Tori Lynn - I have painted many rugs on the back of vinyl flooring then coat them with several coats of polyurethane.. I have one in our rental cabin at the kitchen sink that has held up great for years..  I had been thinking of using the painted rugs for outdoor staging - great for color accent..  Thanks - you always have great ideas.. God bless,
