Moving Tips: Making Your Move Smooth and Stress-Free

By

Moving can be overwhelming, but you can make it much more manageable with the right approach. Here are some tips to help you prepare for and complete your San Antonio, Dallas-Fort Worth, or Austin, Texas, move with as little stress as possible!

Downsize Your Belongings

  1. Begin Now: Go through your belongings well before the move so you have plenty of time to make decisions.
  2. Create Categories: Divide your belongings into categories like "keep," "donate," and "sell" to help you stay organized.
  3. Be Realistic: Consider whether you need or use each item and be honest about what you can live without. Shedding unnecessary possessions will make the process easier.
  4. Try the 90/90 Rule: If you haven't used an item in the past 90 days and don't plan to use it in the next 90 days, let it go.

Pack Efficiently

  1. Start Early: Begin packing at least a few weeks before moving day to avoid last-minute panic.
  2. De-Clutter: Get rid of any items you don't need or use anymore to save time and space.
  3. Label Everything: Label each box with its contents and the room it belongs in for easy unpacking.
  4. Use Proper Materials: Use sturdy boxes, packing tape, bubble wrap, and newspaper to protect your belongings.

Pack Fragile Items with Care

  1. Wrap Items Individually: Wrap each fragile item individually in bubble wrap or packing paper to prevent them from banging against each other during the move.
  2. Fill Empty Spaces: Fill empty spaces in boxes with crumpled packing paper or foam peanuts to prevent items from shifting around during transport.
  3. Label Boxes as Fragile: Clearly mark boxes containing fragile items as "Fragile" and use arrows to indicate which side should face up during transport.
  4. Pack Glassware Vertically: Pack glassware like wine glasses or stemware vertically with plenty of padding at the bottom for support.

Create a Moving Checklist

  1. Notify Utility Companies: Contact gas, electric, water, and internet providers to schedule disconnects or transfers.
  2. Forward Mail: Submit a change of address form with the post office to forward your mail to your new address.
  3. Gather Important Documents: Make sure you have all important documents, including identification and medical records, with you during the move.
  4. Arrange Transportation: If you're driving long-distance or shipping a car, arrange transportation in advance.

Hire a Moving Company

  1. Research: Look for reputable moving companies that have good reviews and ratings. You can also ask around for recommendations.
  2. Check Services: Make sure the moving company offers the services you need, such as packing and unpacking, safe transfer of fine art or electronics, piano moving, or installation services at your new place.
  3. Get Quotes: Compare quotes from different companies to find the best services at the best price.
  4. Ask Questions: Ask about their insurance policies, experience, and if they offer any additional services like packing or storage.

Handle Unexpected Challenges

  1. Be Prepared: Have a backup plan in case of unexpected delays or issues.
  2. Stay Calm: Don't let stress get the best of you; take breaks when needed and stay organized.
  3. Communicate Effectively: Keep lines of communication open with your moving company and anyone else involved in the move.

Moving with Pets

  1. Keep Your Pet's Routine as Normal as Possible: Maintain your pet's usual feeding, walking, and playtime schedules after the move to help them adjust more quickly.
  2. Prepare a Pet Travel Kit: Pack a bag for your pet with food, water, treats, toys, and any necessary medications or medical records. This will ensure they have everything they need during the journey.
  3. Secure Your Pet During Transport: Place your furry friend in a carrier or crate to prevent them from getting injured in the event of an accident.
  4. Introduce Your Pet to Their New Home Gradually: When you arrive at your new home, introduce your pet to one room at a time so they can acclimate gradually. Set up their bed, food and water bowls, and litter box in this room and allow them to adjust before opening them up to the entire house.

Unpacking and Settling In

  1. Unpack by Priority: Start by unpacking the essentials, such as kitchenware, bedding, and toiletries. Once these items are unpacked, move on to other rooms and belongings.
  2. Organize as You Go: As you unpack each box, take the time to organize your belongings in their designated spaces. This will save time and help keep your new home clutter-free.
  3. Add Personal Touches: Hang up photos, artwork, or decorations that make you feel at home. Displaying familiar objects can help create a sense of comfort and familiarity in your new space.
  4. Explore Your New Neighborhood: Invest some time in exploring your new neighborhood. You feel more connected to your new community once you discover local restaurants, parks, or shops that interest you.

This is a wonderful guide!  My favorite tip is one that we should be using all the time:

"Try the 90/90 Rule: If you haven't used an in the past 90 days and don't plan to use it in the next 90 days, let it go."

Excellent list of what to do when you move.  Having relocated with corporate moves and them packing for me, I'd offer a couple of tips.  When corporate moving companies pack your stuff, they pack everything!  So empty your trash and clean the trash cans as they'll get boxed up. Nothing worse than unpacking trash!
