Just Pick One Dang It!

Timmothy N. Timm's cartoon today is an easy one to turn into a Real Estate message. As Realtors we need to remember we are not parents to our home buying clients. Telling them to just pick one is a really dumb way to treat a client. Maybe you have shown them 100 houses over the last three months and your patients are getting thin.

This is NOT the time to give up either. Another agent will be happy to pick them up and who knows, they just may buy the very next home they see.

I have read several testimonials on Active Rain where the client has mentioned the agents patience. I have also read many where they took a year or longer to purchase BUT they did purchase.

If you are a new Real Estate professional and you do not have patience you need to work on it or find another profession. If you got into this business with no savings to fall back on or any other source of income do not let your desperation become apparent to your client by pushing them to buy. I would recommend keeping your license but find another way to earn money until you can work comfortably as a Real Estate professional.

In today's market place I wish the Buyers had more than one to choose from. Inventory in are area is very scarce and the Buyers don't have too much time to think about it...

I would want them both as well, haha, it would take me a bit to choose between those two if I could only have one.

Hi Bob:

While picking a home is a far cry from choosing between a grape and a carrot stick, the point in Timmothy's cartoon, and your post, about being patient is an excellent one.

Well said Fred Griffin Florida Real Estate . I too ask a closing question every time, I learned that from my first job selling stereos in the 70's.

Selling stereos!

My first sales job was Arthur Murray Dance School, selling dance lessons.   They came in for their free coupon lesson or gift certificate lesson.  On a small table in the corner was an outline of our "introductory programs" and a sales contract and a pen. That way "the paperwork" doesn't come as a surprise, it's been there for the entire 30 minutes while they learned some basic dance steps.  At the end of the lesson, I ask them to sit at that table... and I go for the sale!

I still use that technique when I go on a listing appointment... I ask them to show me the house, but I say, "May I set this on the table while you show me?"  And I put a Listing Contract and a pen on the table.   An ice breaker, if you will.

Endre Barath, Jr. I knew you were a patient man because I never knew a Marine who wasn't. I think my longest wait with a client was about 2 years.

I have never worked in such a hot market myself Buzz Mackintosh , not even during the oil boom which happened at the same time a flood wiped out 1/4 of the homes in our city.

It is Kat Palmiotti . Especially a Broker. Patience with the agents under you and patience with the State Board plus all the rest that goes along with being a RE agent.

Thank you Jeff Dowler, CRS . Timmothy is the most patient person I know so I wonder if he was telling "someone" needs to be more patient with him???

Spot on Bob- I've heard agents boast that they will show a buyer "x" number of homes and they need to be able to pick from that. I find it insulting. Patience is key.

Hello, Bob "RealMan" Timm the process of buying a home (selling as well) can test our patience. We must focus on serving our clients and their needs.

Indeed, do not say "just pick one" over food or a home. They are both important to the chooser. It's all about perspective.

That really is insulting, to think we can pick what they need and then be smug about cutting them lose Kathy Streib .

When the right home comes along, most buyers with make an offer to buy. Their next challenge is making the most attractive offer in this very competitive market in which we find ourselves these days.

Good point Bob. I try to be patient with my client. I work hard to make sure they're the one making the choice. Sometimes people want me to tell them what to do and I remind them I'm not paying the mortgage.

Well said Carla Freund . I enjoyed working with Buyers who knew what they wanted. One of my favorites was a gal who made it clear that it was an obligation to hear out the parents opinion BUT not to give it any credence.
