Motivational Monday…Being YOU

What a perfect way to begin the week by being YOU!  This means the real you…not the YOU others want you to be or that you think others want.

Today is International Being You Day!  It was created by Dr. Dain Heer 3 years ago.

There are so many pressures to be a certain way…to think along the same lines as your peers.  Many want us to journey along the same path they take in life.

When I was a young adult, I had what I consider a huge epiphany. I was dating someone who liked to hunt, fish, and go camping every weekend. Having never tried this, I gave it a go. I wouldn’t say that I hated every minute of it, but let’s just say that if I never went camping again, it would be too soon.

My problem was that I thought I needed to enjoy doing all of these things. My huge epiphany was when I realized that it was ok for me to not enjoy hunting and camping. It was who I am…why deny it.

Once I realized this it felt like a large heavy cloak had been lifted off of me. I was who I am and there is nothing wrong with that.

It wasn’t as if I was never going to go camping again but it would only be IF it was because I truly wanted to go.

This weekend one of our family’s new graduates has already reached that Being You status. He chose a small family-focused graduation party rather than a huge blowout like his friends had because he does not like all of the attention and focus. He knows who he is and is comfortable with his choices.

Life truly begins when you discover who you are and not only accept it but embrace it as well.

When people try to be someone they are not, it rarely works out very well.  Being true to ourselves is a wonderful way to live life!

Ray Henson that's how it is or was for many of us. I've known very few  people who were comfortable in their own skin at a young age. Usually, we get that way after years of working hard to be what we aren't.

Good morning Kathy Streib ,

Once you discover who you are and are happy with you the revelation makes it easy to move forward! My favorite quote on this topic has always been: Be yourself; everyone else is already taken. Oscar Wilde

Good morning, Kathy.
Well, this brings back a lot of memories. When I was young, I had a lot of expectations put on me by my guardians. If I deviated, there were consequences. It was such a sense of freedom when I became an adult and could choose to focus on being me. I'm far from perfect but I'm being the best me I can.

I have never had an issue with being myself and more often than not it was a point of concern for those near to me.  The expression: My oh my look at Ed dance, everyone else is out of step rings true to me.

Hi Kathy,

You struck a chord when you mentioned camping.  When Rick and I were first married, we would go to the Colorado River and lakes with our boat.  We did a lot of camping and boating.  We borrowed a 40-foot motor home and took the boat.  It was still camping.  I finally had it with camping and have never done it again. I could tell you some stories!  I would say that was my moment.

Kathy, I loved the part of the story that you address dating someone who had interests you didn't share.  I had a similar experience.  I dated a guy for a few months, who had everything a gal would supposedly want.  He was a well respected doctor.  He was kind, and very funny.  However, he was an avid racket ball player, and liked to run on weekends.  He thought I should go along.  Finally, one hot 104 degree Sacramento August Day, we were running along the American River Parkway. I began feeling faint.  While resting on a nearby lawn, I looked at him and said, "You like to play racket ball and run.  I don't.  I like to swim, and you don't.  Somehow, I don't believe this is going to work out for us."  We moved on!. . .Next!

Not being your authentic self is very painful. Unfortunately we sometimes don't learn that lesson until much later in life.

Your camping experience reminds me of my boating experience. LOL

We are currently "camping" but our version would not be even considered camping by most campers. I don't do well without all the luxuries.

Call a Marana neighbor, I'm THERE!

This really resonates.  As a new agent trainer, I used to always, ALWAYS, remind people to be themselves, no one else.  As individuals, we make our own connections - often for life.  Why would we want to be anyone else??!!
