I Didn't Know They Canned That Stuff

Most first time home owners can not afford to buy their "forever" home right out of the gate. Most first time home owners also make what I consider to be a big mistake... borrowing the absolute maximum amount of funds they possibly can. Doing so can leave them so tight financially they can not even afford materials to hire a professional to fix up relatively small projects around the house.

The solution, ELBOW GREASE!

Elbow grease translated is DIY (that is Do It Yourself) which unfortunately is a  foreign term to many young people today (old man talking). The most common DIY projects to fixing up your house and adding value to it are:

Painting

Refinishing/replacing flooring

Filling in cracks & nail holes

All three of these things can be done by a home owner without the help of a professional or building permits. They all require elbow grease and they all will add to your pleasure of living in your new home.

If you have any questions about how to accomplish any of these tasks just Google them or look them up on YouTube. Your home improvement store and the library are also great places to get advice on how to meet your home improvement goals.

I'm hiring a professional to do ALL those things.  I do some things well.... shoot what I aim at for example.

When I purchased my first home I did it all Don Baker ... even things I shouldn't have like electrical and plumbing.

Hi Bob... I'm not a do-it-yourself type and as I've often said my husband is a "domestic idiot." I had to teach him how to load a dishwasher, which appliance was the oven, how to change a light bulb. All that being said, I think too much of our society is all about instant gratification.  Many of us started in life at the bottom rung of a ladder in our professions and worked our way up, modest housing, etc. You earn it through life.

Amen Nina Hollander, Broker . My father was much like your husband. His father was a professional handyman but if my dad would touch any of his tools grandpa took him to the tool shed instead of tutoring him on how to use them.

Hi Bob,

Great post.  First-time home buyers should be ready to put a little or a lot of elbow grease into their new home.  Great comic strip today!

Thank you Sheri Sperry - MCNE® I will pass that on to Timmoty (he is right here next to me). He really loves to hear that his work is appreciated. As far as the 1st time home owner goes I think I used at least a 5 gallon pail of elbow grease on my first home.

Good evening Bob,

Love the cartoon strip today and love your tie into first time buyers needing to consider a little elbow grease with their first home. It's an exciting time when you buy your first home and most are eager to dig in!

Hi Bob- I'm still rolling on the floor laughing at Nina Hollander, Broker's comment. When we m loved into our first home which was new construction, we put in all of the flower beds, front and back. I can remember both of us taking multi-wheelbarrow loads of dirt that had been dumped on the driveway to where we would eventually have our flower beds.

Bob, I was blessed with other talents and skills. We would skip a few wonderful meals and a few wonderful bottles of wine when it came to fixing things.... because we would need to hire a Pro:)Endre

If only elbow grease was that easy to come by and we could just rub some on when we needed it, haha.

If there isn't money to hire a pro, the next best thing is to do it yourself! I've painted, spackled, and done a bunch of other things myself. As I'm getting a little older, I'm more likely to hire someone now. Maybe. But first time homeowners? Go for it!

I got a good laugh out of Nina Hollander, Broker 's comment as well Kathy Streib as it made me think of my fathers lack of skills.

One thing I learned the hard way Endre Barath, Jr. is that if you are going to hire a professional hire one with a good reputation. I say "the hard way" because I used to hire the least expensive pro I could find... what did I get... cheap quality work.

Wouldn't that be nice Brian England ? Maybe you and I could patent it and live on easy street for the rest of our lives.

I am in the same camp as you Kat Palmiotti . One area I might attempt to DIY is plumbing. Plumbing is getting easier and easier to DIY while hiring a professional will be very expensive.

I thought so to Myrl Jeffcoat and I will let Timmothy know you liked it. Nina Hollander, Broker 's comment was great. I never met anyone who needed instructions on how to load a dishwasher before. 😄
