This Lighthouse Has Me Stumped

When is a lighthouse not a lighthouse? When it is a tree stump carved to look like a lighthouse.

Tree Stump Lighthouse

Who says there is nothing to do in the winter in Sturgeon Bay, WI? This artist found something to keep busy. Tucked away on a side street just east of downtown, is a lighthouse, unlike all other lighthouses.

The lighthouse - carved from a tree stump - keeps with the nautical character of the town famous for shipbuilding.

The body of the stump about 10’ high was likely the remains of a tree that was taken down to remove it from interfering with the power lines above. The artist decided rather than remove the tree in its entirety to create this wonderful work of art for all to enjoy.

Next time you are in Sturgeon Bay, just go east out of town towards Memorial Drive. In addition to great views of the bay, you will find this cool lighthouse.

Joseph Domino 480-390-6011 - I am in awe by the artist's imagination! I never thought of a tree carved into a Light House. It must have taken a lot of time, patience, and sore muscles! But the tree carver succeeded!

Hey Kat Palmiotti
As I commented below, I had my husband leave about 4 feet of stump. Then I put decorated birdhouses on them.

Very cool!  When my husband cut down trees in our yard, I had him leave them about 4 feet high. Then I'd put a decorated birdhouse on top. That was fun.

That's pretty clever use of an old tree, Joseph.  Looking at it, I would have never guessed.

How cool is this? I have seen stumps cared as wolves, as dragons, as wizards, but never as a lighthouse.

The likelihood of my ever visiting Sturgeon Bay is small. Given that...I am pleased to see the stump/lighthouse symbol of creativity.

How clever and very meticulous n his work. Does it have a working light and a loud horn as well?

That's pretty creative, Joseph, and no doubt a great deal of work to get all the details especially at the top.
