When is a lighthouse not a lighthouse? When it is a tree stump carved to look like a lighthouse.
Who says there is nothing to do in the winter in Sturgeon Bay, WI? This artist found something to keep busy. Tucked away on a side street just east of downtown, is a lighthouse, unlike all other lighthouses.
The lighthouse - carved from a tree stump - keeps with the nautical character of the town famous for shipbuilding.
The body of the stump about 10’ high was likely the remains of a tree that was taken down to remove it from interfering with the power lines above. The artist decided rather than remove the tree in its entirety to create this wonderful work of art for all to enjoy.
Next time you are in Sturgeon Bay, just go east out of town towards Memorial Drive. In addition to great views of the bay, you will find this cool lighthouse.
