I have been doing the SEO for our vacation rental company for the past 20 years and the complexity of it has grown enormously to the point that I am not sure where it is headed.
On Site Keywords and Meta Data
SEO seemed to really start out pretty simple. What your website was about, what your domain was, what your URL was, and what your title and meta description was seemed to really directly effect your rankings. You could make a simple change to the title of a given page and you would see your rankings increase.
As people began buying all the relevant domains and keyword stuffing everything Google moved on to........
Links, links, and more links
What sites and how many were linking to your website had a drastic effect on your rankings. People begin to buy links from anyone and everyone. The people devoted to SEO began buying websites, adding content, and linking to their main websites.
Once links were exhausted Google moved on to...........
Content, content, and more content
Everything became out how much content do you have on a given topic. For example, if you rent vacation rentals on the Big Island of Hawaii you should have content on any and every place of interest, every vacation rental complex, places to eat, things to do, etc. The internet got flooded with information at this point.
Where we stand currently is Google seems to give a fair amount of weight to all 3 of these with more weight seeming to be on content. The question is.....What is next? With the rise of AI and the ability for it to write relevant content at rapid paces something has to come next. What do you think it is?
