Sand N’ Straw Community Farm
We first heard about the family-run Sand N’ Straw Community Farm from our next door neighbor the other day. Today seemed like a good day to check it out and see what they had to offer.
The Farm Stand is open on Saturdays from 9 to 12 noon. You can simply walk in and pick up produce, root vegetables, herbs and fresh eggs. They have other plant-based products as well. Feature photo is of our haul today.
The Farm Box Program offers 2 types of “Farm Boxes,” a Half Share (5 – 7 different items) or a Full Share (10 – 12 items). A Half Share typically works for 1 or 2 people, while the Full Share is good for 3 to 4 people, for up to a week. Farm Boxes are also known as CSAs or Community Supported Agriculture.
Farm Box offerings vary by what is currently at peak harvest, what’s available that particular week, and the season. Pick-ups for Farm Boxes are between 1 and 5 pm on Tuesdays and Fridays. You can order Farm Boxes online by the week or have an on-going order (membership).
Full Share Boxes are $35, and Half Shares are $20.
There are workshops and special events each month. Kids can visit with the farm’s animals (sheep, pigs, goats, chickens) on Saturdays from 9:30 until 11:30.
Sand N’ Straw Community Farm also offers the Young Pioneers Program, a range of educational opportunities for kids with a varied curriculum. Programs are created by experienced teachers. Young Pioneers offers outdoor classrooms and hiking trails at the farm for nature-based learning opportunities.
Sand N’ Straw Community Farm is located at 629 Mar Vista Drive, about ½ mile off the 78 freeway in Vista. For more information call (760) 575-4748 or visit their website.
