Sand N’ Straw Community Farm

We first heard about the family-run Sand N’ Straw Community Farm from our next door neighbor the other day. Today seemed like a good day to check it out and see what they had to offer.

The Farm Stand is open on Saturdays from 9 to 12 noon. You can simply walk in and pick up produce, root vegetables, herbs and fresh eggs. They have other plant-based products as well. Feature photo  is of our haul today.

The Farm Box Program offers 2 types of “Farm Boxes,” a Half Share (5 – 7 different items) or a Full Share (10 – 12 items). A Half Share typically works for 1 or 2 people, while the Full Share is good for 3 to 4 people, for up to a week. Farm Boxes are also known as CSAs or Community Supported Agriculture.

Farm Box offerings vary by what is currently at peak harvest, what’s available that particular week, and the season. Pick-ups for Farm Boxes are between 1 and 5 pm on Tuesdays and Fridays. You can order Farm Boxes online by the week or have an on-going order (membership).

Full Share Boxes are $35, and Half Shares are $20.

There are workshops and special events each month. Kids can visit with the farm’s animals (sheep, pigs, goats, chickens) on Saturdays from 9:30 until 11:30.

Sand N’ Straw Community Farm also offers the Young Pioneers Program, a range of educational opportunities for kids with a varied curriculum. Programs are created by experienced teachers. Young Pioneers offers outdoor classrooms and hiking trails at the farm for nature-based learning opportunities.

Sand N’ Straw Community Farm is located at 629 Mar Vista Drive, about ½ mile off the 78 freeway in Vista. For more information call (760) 575-4748 or visit their website.

Hi Jeff- this is such a good way to support local growers and get fresh produce!!!   We had something similar near our home in Delray Beach. I love the idea of buying something that was grown just a few miles away!

Jeff now that is something right up my alley, interestingly reminded me of when I was a kid and my parents would drive up route 58 in CT and buy stuff on the side of the road.... On a side note the photo is that of the half or the full basket?, Endre

Hi Endre Barath, Jr.

We just purchased individual items at the Farm Stand so I'm not sure if it equates to a half or full share. But we are signing up today to pick up a half share box each week and try it out!

That sounds great! By the way, what kind of berry is that, on the right of the eggs?

Kat Palmiotti The broccoli was great last night and the eggs made a great omelette this morning.

The berries are mulberries - they have a wonderful flavor! I don't think I have eaten mulberries since I was a kid - we had a mulberry tree in our yard!!

We were pretty impressed with the whole operation Brian England and the produce has been delicious. Certainly a far cry what what you get in the grocery stores!

And we could have bought more Nina Hollander, Broker but didn't want to over do it and not use everything in a reasonable period of time.

Hi Jeff,

I like this idea.  What a great way to support local farms.  I think this would be a fun excursion, and would definitely check it out.
