There is a price to Pay for Freedom
Our Country was founded by people escaping religious persecution and looking to make a fresh start for themselves and their families. Life was not easy and the early settlers often had to fight for their lives. The history of our country was one of people looking to be left in peace and to live their lives free of persecution and overbearing foreign governments.
The American Revolution was fought from 1775 to 1783 and at the end of the war, 25,000 combatants died for the freedom of others.
The war of 1812, was again fought to protect our country from interference by a foreign government and at the end of this conflict, which lasted 3 years, another 25,000 Americans had given up their lives.
The largest single conflict which cost Americans lives was not fought against a foreign government but was the Civil War with state against state. This single conflict took more American lives than any other war this country has ever fought at 625,000 casualties.
The ensuing wars saw sacrifices made during World War I, World War II, Korea, Vietnam, and the battles for liberty fought in the Middle East which continues through to today.
All told in over 300 years, 1,343,812 lives of American men and women have been sacrificed to defend and protect our way of life and also the basic freedoms of oppressed peoples all over the world.
This tally will certainly rise as time progresses, as we as a Nation have always been there to defend those that can't protect themselves. Also, we have taken on the responsibility of being the defender of Democracy and freedom.
We Americans have always tried to be left alone but when provoked, have risen to defend ourselves and eliminate the threats to peace and liberty when it has become necessary.
On Memorial Day we celebrate our freedom and hopefully find the time to say a prayer for those that have sacrificed for us and a prayer to protect those that are still in harm’s way.
Enjoy your Memorial Day, this freedom did come with a price.
