Memorial Day is a holiday weekend celebrated with gatherings of friends and family. Barbecues and outdoor get togethers are a welcome beginning to summer vacations. But the day is meant for a different celebration.
Memorial Day, originally known as Decoration Day, is a dedication to those who have given the ultimate sacrifice so that we can enjoy the freedom that is so well known around the world.
Some of the best speeches about the reason for the holiday are by Ronald Reagan.
This year while contemplating this post, I happened upon a site I had never heard of before, Taps Across America.
Taps Across America is an organization created in 2020, sponsored by Taps for Veterans, founded in 2012.
Taps for Veterans was formed to provide buglers for veterans memorial services.
Due to the pandemic and cancellation of public events, Taps Across American was created. Now an annual ritual, Taps Across American is intended to keep the public spirits alive and create solidarity. The public is invited to reflect for a moment of silence to honor the fallen and possibly share their talent of playing "Taps" independently. Taps is to be played at 3 pm in YOUR TIME ZONE.
Check out the site to understand how you can register and participate.
What a wonderful tribute that we can make to fallen soldiers. If you or someone you know plays an instrument, doesn't have to be a bugle, can register and participate.
Thank you to CBS for sharing stories and tributes for Memorial Day, especially the story of Billie D Harris. Billie D Harris' widow, a 6 week bride, never knew what happened to her new husband. This video shares where he's buried and the tribute by a grateful country for his sacrifice, and not the US. At 24.12 in the video, one veteran from Surprise, Arizona is featuring playing taps.
Thank you to those who have served and did not come home. And thank you to those who have served and are serving in our US Armed Forces.
