How to Pack Your Belongings for a Safe and Efficient Move

 

Moving to a new home can be an exciting but intimidating process on its own. For many, packing up their belongings is a source of additional stress. There are many things to worry about, ranging from organization to using the right type of boxes. However, there are also multiple ways to simplify the packing process.

Lose the Clutter

Moving into your dream home can be a dramatic change that signifies new beginnings. Many see it as an opportunity to de-clutter, as too many belongings can complicate packing. This is why getting rid of unneeded things is a great way to lighten the load for both your stress levels and the moving company you'll eventually hire. Consider getting rid of items you no longer use, clothes, outdated papers, and furniture you don't need.

There are multiple ways that you can do this. Many choose to host a garage sale or sell their old furniture and appliances online. You can also make donations to the Salvation Army or Big Brothers or Savers when it comes to things such as clothes.

Begin by making a list of each room in your current house. After reviewing them separately, estimate how many boxes you'll need depending on the content of each room. For example, a small bedroom might need a large box (typically can hold up to 4.5 cubic feet) and a wardrobe box that can hold hanging clothes. This is just a rough estimate, and it will depend on the exact contents of your room. Once you finish your assessment, write down how many boxes you'll need for each room.

When it comes to tape and markers, it always helps to have extra. One roll of packing tape could be enough to tape anywhere from 20-30 medium-sized boxes. This could vary greatly depending on your taping method.

Here are some of the specific items that should be on your supply list for moving:

• Various boxes ranging from small, medium, large, and wardrobe boxes and specialized boxes. Smaller boxes are better for packing little things you need to keep track of, such as smaller electronics and jewelry.

 

• Heavy-duty packing tape. Regular office tape won't cut when securely sealing your items for a move.

• Permanent markers for labels. You'll want to use markers with a broad tip for clear labeling.

• Labels. They should be clean with enough space to write on.

• Packing paper, bubble wrap, and packing peanuts. Some boxes won't get filled up completely. The best way to ensure things don't move around is by using packing peanuts. You can also use packing paper and bubble wrap to secure fragile items like fine china.

It's also crucial for the movers to follow the rights and responsibilities when you move provided by the FMCSA for a smooth and effortless transition to your new home.

Label Your Boxes as You Pack Your Belongings for the Move

The next phase of the packing process involves making a label system. This will make it easier to unpack once you're in your new home, helping you feel organized. Make sure to stick a label on every box and use the marker to label the type of contents within the box and the room it belongs in. Begin by packing room by room, ensuring you've packed, sealed, and labeled all the contents of the room before moving to the next one. Labels should be positioned where they are clear and visible, such as the upper front of the box or the top.

Other strategies might include making one big inventory list of each box marked by numbers. You can

designate a number for each box and mark the contents on your list. This is useful for ensuring the moving company has appropriately handled all your belongings and that nothing has been lost during transportation.

Keep Clear Communication With Your Moving Company

You should always reach out to a moving company at your earliest convenience. Ideally, research and make a choice 8 to 10 weeks before the move. This will give them enough time to prepare and plan accordingly. Most companies offer a basic plan where they will load your boxes onto the vehicle and place them in your new home.

However, many companies also provide additional services. For example, they might do the actual packing and unpacking for you. This saves you time and stress while being the more convenient option. But remember that this option is more expensive and might not be the most budget-friendly route. It helps to be especially clear with your chosen moving company about the plan that suits you best. Ask for the benefits, quotes and drawbacks of each plan.

Following the instructions above, you can create an efficient packing system, significantly reducing some of the stress associated to the move. Tackle your inventory list one room at a time and begin the process as early as possible to reduce the risk of surprises down the road.
