Everybody Wants a Place to Live

It's Spring and the most active time of year for house hunting. It's also the time of year when the birds and the bees are active and looking to increase the animal population.

I take precautions around the house in sheltered areas as the bees like to start hives that will cause us issues later in the year.

I also see birds flying into the tops of trees around the yard most likely to their nests.

Birds will seek out sheltered spaces for nesting and some of them are somewhat unusual.

I have been seeing a lot of birds flying around our front stoop and didn't think much of it.  My wife will place decorative wreaths on our front door, appropriate for the season.

Obviously, someone thought it looked like a very welcome spot.

Hopefully the eggs will hatch, and I will need to add some additional flowers, so the spot doesn't look so comfortable next year.

What a delightful surprise that would be, Ed.  It looks like it could be Hummingbird eggs.

Ed I don't think I have ever seen a bird build a nest in a place like that.

Hi Ed- how lucky you are to have a nest nearby. I've seen nests built in crevices in letters in signs above retail stores.   Yes, everybody wants a place to live.

Hi Ed... love the picture of the nest in the wreath. I always have a seasonal wreath on my front door... but have yet to have a nest in one or a nest anywhere on my property. Loved the title!

Oh I love that the birds found a perfect spot for them to have babies - although I would think the door opening and closing all the time would be annoying to them.!

Myrl Jeffcoat   I don't know what they are, and the activity has been slight the past few days. I fear the birds may have moved on.

Thank you for the recognition.

George Souto   We have had birds resting on the wreaths over the years, but this was a first for us.

Kathy Streib   I have seen them nest in the dwarf maples just outside the stoop, but this was a first.

Nina Hollander, Broker   It's what we do, we provide opportunities for people and in this case birds to find places to rest and grow a family.

Kat Palmiotti   We are rural and all that come are in cars and drive up to the back and enter through the side door. Only delivery people come to the front.

Hi Ed Silva - OMG!  A few years ago, I had a wreath on my front door with a nest.   We had come back from vacation to find this nest.   We have a glass window in the door frame, so the mama would fly away every time we walked by the door.  We relocated the wreath to a decorative gate in our courtyard.

Ed:

Birds can be pretty clever about finding the right place to nest for protection. Hopefully that's a door you can avoid using once there are hatchlings.

We had a morning dove nest above our front door in one house - we tried to avoid using the door since every time we got near the birds would fly off. Somehow the kids grew up safely and flew the coop.

Sheri Sperry - MCNE®   We seldom use the front door so they should be fine assuming Mama stays with the nest.

Jeff Dowler, CRS   Ony time will tell with the nest.
