Are you familiar with the Wounded Warrior Project? As a very brief synopsis, Charity Navigator rates this organization at a 97% for transparency and 89% for financial handling. No less than 70% of the financial donations go directly to the Wounded Warriors in one form or another. I chose to donate to this organization last year when a veteran relative of Diane's passed away suddenly last year. We gave a generous donation under my name, and they have been sending me gentle gifts ever since.
Earlier last week, the Wounded Warrior Project sent me a very touching letter that accompanied a Challenge Coin. Many Americans who have not served in the military have never seen a Challenge Coin, let alone hold one in their hand. It came to be as certain military commanders sometimes issued Challenge Coins to their troops as a symbol of their shared bond and enduring commitment to the unit to which they were assigned. Hence, I found it interesting to receive one from the Wounded Warrior Project. Of all the gifts they have sent up until now, this one is extra special to me and it has a home next to my military commemorative beer mug. In case you cannot read the back side of the coin it states: “The Greatest Casualty is being forgotten”, a quote that resonates with me.
Some people value gold and silver. While of course I too value some material things, I deeply value (and respect) courage, character and commitment. Ask any soldier you might know or get to know on a personal level, and he or she will agree with this statement, especially those who have seen action in any one or more military conflict. Many soldiers may never have planned to serve in the military, but when events such as 9/11 happened, many knew what to do and volunteered for our country.
I am grateful for every volunteer who has chosen to serve, keeping in mind we do not have conscripts like other countries. (The U.S. has had a volunteer army since July 1973, when conscripts ended; it's hard to fathom that in a little over a month from now, it will be 50 years since we've had a Volunteer Military.)
As a Realtor, over the years I have had the privilege of representing veterans, and there is one that I am actively now working with again. Neither the price point nor the fact that a veteran may be looking to rent vs. buy or sell has never mattered or been a deterrent to me. I always have and always will go out of my way and proudly help one of our Veterans.
