We have an interesting challenge this month by Kat Palmiotti regarding our thoughts on Artificial Intelligence. This ought to be quite interesting reading. My thoughts come from a place of sincere concern.
First, let's look at what the words, artificial intelligence actually mean:
Artificial - Something made or produced by human beings rather than occurring naturally.
Intelligence - the ability to acquire and apply knowledge and skills and to be able to reason.
When you look at these terms independently, it reasons that in order to create anything "artificial", it requires human intelligence. The definition of these two terms together means, "the simulation of human intelligence processes by machines, especially computer systems."
My biggest concern thus far with the whole, AI phenomenon stems from the lessening of humans actually thinking on their own. As a former high school Biology teacher, my students had to apply themselves, do some studying, and make an effort to pass the course.
With AI and many other technologies, people are reading less, writing has become a thing of the past (except for this fabulous AR Community), and basically, the human mind is becoming mush. This is not a good thing. We were blessed with a human mind that is a fascinating part of our bodies. However, did you know that we only tap into a fraction of what our minds are capable?
Imagine if we were able to tap into our minds in a deeper manner! I believe we are all capable of so much! Being led to believe that we can't achieve something is what most people are led to believe over their lifetime. What a shame.
Artificial anything will never, ever be equal to anything that is naturally occurring. Replicating life through cloning, etc. are all met with serious consequences and flaws. Intelligence derived artificially is just that, artificial. And like artificial sweeteners, they are poison to the human body. I believe the same is true for AI - it will be poison to the human mind.
