Up, Up and A Weigh!

The new ban on weight (obesity) discrimination law in New York City has garnered much attention and is apparently gaining traction on land. By air, New Zealand's international airline, Air New Zealand, plans to weigh all passengers, as they do luggage, before boarding international flights.

Be aware world travelers, Air New Zealand plans to weigh at least 10,000 passengers in 30 days, through the month of July.

There might also be flight safety concerns about the extra weight that some carry and how it adversely affects engine performance or fuel consumption when on those long, transatlantic trips. Might be, could be. Fears of privacy breach and body discrimination have come up with some people.

It's all part of a requirement by the Civil Aviation Authority. They claim the data taken will remain anonymous, it's strictly for weight load and distribution for planes before takeoff. Better to be safe than sorry!

Used to be when taking to the airways, the phrase used was, up, up and away. It has been replaced with up, up and a weigh!

Hello Wanda,  I wonder how soon this happens on some of our flights here in the U.S.  Maybe some over weigh people will not be sitting next to me that I have more room.  LOL

It isn't that bad. We have taken several helicopter flights and weight distribution is critical on small craft, so it stands to reason that larger craft need some attention as well.

You can fudge a little on a driver's license regarding weight (I have by 5 pounds) but the scale will tell. It makes sense to weigh all passengers in my opinion, Ed Silva!

The weighing business has been in effect in the USA on small flights around island for some time. I remember being weighed numerous times years ago when I was travelling to smaller Caribbean islands.

Have never been weighed by an airline employee, Nina Hollander, Broker, wouldn't mind it though. If it becomes a regular thing for all airlines to follow, some people could get bumped off flights a the last minute due to too much weight.

Hi Wanda- While some might find it intrusive...it does make sense. If I'm flying, I'd like to know that "we" are not overweight!!!

Ships need to distribute containers by weight to make sure the ship remains balanced. I can see that might be necessary on planes - same theory. It could make people feel like luggage.

Obesity is certainly more common these days and it makes me sad.  I think it began when they started poisoning our food supply and pushing pills.

Great headline and obesity is an issue. One reason I don't like to fly is I pay for one seat and the person who is overweight next to me has her or her "fat" cascading onto my armrest.  The airlines have made seats for very small people, height and weight to make more money. I am 5'10" and have a difficult time finding room for my legs.

For some, it's lack of control and giving in to urges for others, it could be medical issues, Brian England. The amount of fast food drive thru's in any city are outrageous. We cook healthy food at home most days and nights!

Understandable, Leanne Smith, the last thing I want is what you describe and when in such close quarters, if someone smells bad as well, you can't get away. My husband is not a tall man and the person's seat in front of us was jammed into his knees...will not fly that airline again!

Am of the same mindset about the 2-seat scenario, Endre Barath, Jr.. Have flown first class one time because I offered to give up my seat and sit over the wing. I was the only one that raised a hand to volunteer.

The flight attendant led me to a seat right up front. The champagne and steak dinner was tops!  It was nice but would not pay the added cost and would rather spend the money elsewhere.

Wanda Kubat-Nerdin - Wanda Can! like you I was more frugal... have only been first class and business class a handful of times and a couple of times was because of what you just said and the other times it was a business trip paid for by the company....Endre
