Do You Still Stand When The Flag Goes BY?

By

My wife and I went to see a local parade last night in Fairlawn, Ohio. Most everyone was sitting in fold-up chairs, with some sitting on the curb, or on blankets. When the color guard came down the street, holding the American flag, the flag of our state, and the American Legion flag, most everyone on our side of the street stood up, the men removing their hats (like I was taught to do). But when I looked across the street and both ways, I could see that there were many who did not bother to get up, or remove their hats. I was kind of amazed and shocked, since this is the first time I had ever noticed anything like this. So, the question is: do you still stand up and show respect when the flag goes by? Or have you seen the same thing that I saw yesterday? Is this how the new generation is being taught? I am just very curious to hear some answers to this from around the country.

The saddest thing is at a ball game when a Dad doesn't tell his son to take his hat off for the national anthem. We really need to spread the word!

Kevin,

I do stand when the flag comes by in a parade and I remove my hat out of respect for what it stands for and those that have died to give me that right.  I fear that there is a lot of apathy around the country about this subject.

Hope that you had a GREAT 4th of July.

Kevin, I always stand, but don't have to bother removing a hat because I rarely wear one.  It is an important symbol of honoring the too many heroes who have valiantly fought and died for our flag and our freedom.

I just can't imagine a country where we would have so little respect that we don't at least stand for the symbol of our nation. i hope it is not the trend of the future.

It's the parents job to raise their children the correct way and to show honor and respect to our flag. I make sure my boys not only take their hats off but sing the anthem when it is being played - I am a stick in the mud about that.  I am disgusted by parents that do not teach their children about this priority - I am open to hearing others comments about a lot of things, but as far as this goes, I am very closed minded, respect our flag and anthem, if you do not like this country - move, it's really not a hard thing to do.

Thanks for a great post!

Colleen,

I am very happy to hear that you teach your children respect for their country and flag. The terrible thing is that I fear there are many these days who do not. Spread the word that patriotism and loyalty are not just words, but deeds we need to instill in the new generation.

Kevin, standing and removing a hat is just the right thing to do. I hope the people who aren't standing are doing it because of lack of education and not out of respect. The parents and teachers need to educate the younger generation more in respecting our nation and the people who have died for it so they can stand on the street and watch a parade.

Kevin, I always stand out of respect for what the flag represents and to those who made the ultimate sacrifice to protect her...

I have always been very patriotic. (And I can still see my dad grabbing the hat off my head and pulling me to my feet if I didn't).

Back in the day, the odd person who did not stand might be corrected. Now talking during the anthem, or at a flag ceremony is to common. I was a Boy Scout, VMI, US Navy. It is in grained to show respect.

But it is new world.

Richard, sad but true. Maybe we need a "patriotism" class.

Hey Kevin Great point. I believe the problem is two fold. Showing respect for our flag is not being taught in our schools and certainly not in our homes the way it was 20 years ago! That's never a good sign

Can't believe they don't stand.  My family is PROUD of my past military service.  Each stands, and I still (30 years later) hold my feet at the 45 degree angle, and my thumbs are on my pant seams.

It was pretty hard for me to believe too Greg, but there were probably 100 or more that were just around me, that did not stand.

Howdy Kevin

I have seen folk's not stand for our Flag here in New Hampshire. I can tell ya it just makes me sick. Not only do I stand at attention, I also still salute our Flag as it goes by, and when it is being raised.

Don't Tread On Me!

I am PROUD of serving in the military, and defending our Grand Country, and our Grand Flag!!

 God Bless The U.S.A.

I think this is something that is only going to become more of the norm in our country. I think the biggest problem is that the respect for the flag is not being practiced in our school systems.

We are so worried about being politically correct that we are going in reverse. What is more important to us -  our country and what we stand for, or trying not to "OFFEND" someone.

God Bless America and Us.

Dale, thanks for dropping by! Very nice to hear from you again.

Barbara, I don't care who it offends, I will still always stand, take off my hat, and show respect for my country.

I stand up, my kids stand up, my husband removes his hat.  If anyone DARES not too,, I (as a former Air Force Wife) and my Husband are very vocal in our opinions about anyone who doesn't respect the flag!
