Is there really a difference ?

Home construction has changed a lot since the term "family room" was invented in 1944, and many new homes have one "great room" instead of two separate living spaces.  I am not sure if I have heard anyone really ask for a living room aka "formal living room". recently.

Firstly, being a history geek I did not realize that the family room was invented.  It has always been there despite a different label.  My mom had a living room and it was one of those rooms that was never used except for company on sundays.  We really did not have a family room because family life centered around the kitchen.

If you're looking at homes, pay attention to the words used in the listings, and if you're selling a home and have both, make sure you feature them in the listing!

People use their homes more than ever before, and having multiple living spaces is a huge selling point for a home.
