Join in celebrating World Ocean Day 2023 on June 8 in Silicon Valley from Santa Cruz to San Francisco to San Jose, Calif. A variety of free and fee events, from beach clean-ups to ocean tours to film festivals occur during the week of World Ocean Day in Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, Monterey, San Mateo and Santa Clara counties.
The World Ocean Day motto is "One Ocean, One Climate, One Future-Together!"
In Santa Cruz County, visit Seymour Marine Discovery Center to learn more about the ocean and its creatures, and even join in beach clean-up.
In San Francisco County, go to Ocean Beach, Stairwell 17 across from the Golden Gate Park to participate in beach clean-up. A beach clean-up occurs also at The Aquarium of the Bay, as well as exhibits on how humans affect ocean health, dissection of an albatross pellet and view of ocean life under the microscope.
In Monterey County at the world-famous Monterey Bay Aquarium, events occur throughout the week of June 8. Even if one can't visit the Aquarium in person, a variety of free educational classes are available for students and their families, including Nurturing Naturalists, Tide Pool Scientists and Teens Can Make a Difference.
In Santa Clara County, there are no oceans, although Alviso historically provided a link to the San Francisco Bay. San Jose’s Happy Hollow Park & Zoo will celebrate World Ocean Day all day long.
