Friday Fun…Eat Your Veggies

While wandering around in Cyberville I read that today is Fresh Veggies Day. With summer upon us and so many Farmer’s Markets available throughout the country (see Nina Hollander, Broker’s recent post) there is no excuse for not doing what our moms always told us…Eat your veggies!

Our son-in-law does not like vegetables of any kind but I have to hand it to him. He made it a point to “pretend” to eat vegetables in front of his sons lest they pick up his distaste for them.

Studies have shown how healthy a vegetable-rich diet can be. Larry prefers many of his vegetables raw however I like them cooked. Either way, we do get our fair share of them.

It’s hard for me to pick out just one favorite and easier for me to tell you which one I absolutely do not like…CAULIFLOWER!

You can put all the cheese in Wisconsin on it…mash it and try to pass it off as potatoes…or fry it…I am NOT FOND of it.

I made the mashed version for something and had to leave the house for two days because of the cauliflower smell!!! (not really but I truly can’t stand the scent of it.)

The best way to prepare cauliflower is by growing it in the trash while ordering a pizza.   Unknown

For Friday Fun…

What’s your favorite and least favorite veggie???

I love vegetables and cook them all the time in different ways. I can't think of one I don't like.

Kat Palmiotti I finally learned how to roast eggplant so that we'd both eat it!!! It's pretty good too.

Mark Don McInnes, Sandpoint-Idaho LOL  when I was in my first apartment, a friend brought over a head of cauliflower that he'd cooked as well as a bowl of cheese. He swore that I'd like it if I covered it in cheese.

I had to laugh at the quote regarding cauliflower, and where it best belongs.  If I thought, it would help to keep the deer away I would plant it in the yard.

Not a bad idea Ed Silva I'm not sure what keeps them away.

Kathy, growing up in NE, my family only exposed me to corn, green beans and peas.   My mom tried to get us to eat asparagus, but it was in the can - GROSS.   Still cannot eat cauliflower or broccoli, same as you - it stinks!   Kale and eggplant are on that same list.

It took awhile to acquire the taste of asparagus and now love it, Kathy, fresh or steamed. The only vegetable that I cannot stand is slimy, boiled squash. The texture hits the gag reflex!

Hi Kathy Streib - Another fun post!  Me and my husband both love veggies and salads.

There is one veggie my husband can not stand, and that is kale.  No matter how it is doctored up, he does not like it.  I get a lot of Brussels sprouts and zucchini, and we always try whatever is in season.

Kathy, just came over from Bill Salvatore's reblog of your 'veggie' post.  It was a fun Friday post - I love Farmers Markets and have a number of favorite vegetables. For instance,  I love tomatoes and corn on the cob.  I very much hate OKRA and BROCCOLI.

Hi Kathy,
I prefer cauliflower over broccoli. It doesn't really have much flavor in my opinion and I've never noticed a bad smell to it. I guess we all have an aversion to at least one food thing. Mine is oatmeal.

Well I missed that it was fresh veggies day but I had them anyhow. We eat a lot of vegetables - raw, steamed, sautéed, grilled, in salads and in smoothies.
