Practical jokes are funny but BIG holes that swallow houses are NOT!

As a Real Estate professional I have not had a client ask me about sink holes in any area that I have sold homes in. However it would not be a bad question to ask when shopping for a home. I know that some of the coal mining areas of ND had a problem with sinkholes several years back when they that area had heavy rains. Over the last many decades coal mines went from underground caves to surface strip mines.

The map below shows pothole hot spots in the USA. Seems FL has the most problems with sinkholes.

I found good information in a 10 year old article by The Conversation. You can check it out here.

Some practical jokes can be harmful both physically and emotionally but there have been quite a few practical jokes over the years in my family.

A very valuable post, Bob. I was going to say I don't ever remember a story about a sink hole in my area and then looked at your map... we are not in an area prone to them.

Good morning Bob,

That is quite a photo! I've never seen one..we live on bedrock in Austin so won't be seeing any sinkholes. I checked your map and interesting to see the states prone to have them.

Good morning Nina Hollander, Broker , my Love. I have not heard of any sink hole stories in the Minot area but 80 miles South there was a problem in an area that had a lot of coal mining going on in the 1920-30's . Fortunately it was a rural are and no homes were lost.

Hello Bob and I hear about sinkholes and see them on TV sometimes in our area, but never had a client ask me about what are the chances

Interesting. I haven't heard anything about sinkholes where I currently live but I just did a quick online search and apparently there were a few in other parts of Montana in the past.

I agree Doug Dawes that sinkholes are no joke and neither are practical jokes that could injure others.

Will Hamm I have never been asked about them either yet they do occur in ND due to old mines.

Good morning Kat Palmiotti . I would assume the MT sinkholes are caused by old mining practices just like ND's are. I think it's neat that you checked. 😊
