The Town of Surfside Beach, South Carolina has launched an initiative to combat cigarette litter. The program called the Cigarette Litter Prevention Program (CLPP), is part of a $500,000 grant awarded by Keep America Beautiful to over 50 organizations throughout the country.
The CLPP in Surfside Beach includes two main components:
- The installation of 50 new cigarette stands throughout the town to collect and recycle cigarette butts. The stands are made from recycled materials and are designed to be eye-catching and inviting. They also feature educational messages about the harmful effects of cigarette litter.
- A public awareness campaign to educate residents and visitors about the importance of disposing of cigarette butts properly. The campaign includes social media posts, radio ads, and public service announcements.
The Town of Surfside Beach hopes that the CLPP will reduce cigarette litter by 51%, which is the average reduction seen in communities that have implemented similar programs. The program is also expected to raise awareness about the harmful effects of cigarette litter and encourage smokers to dispose of their butts properly.
Here are some other ways to reduce cigarette litter:
- Carry a pocket ashtray or portable ashtray with you.
- Use ash and ash/trash receptacles whenever possible.
- Encourage your friends and family to dispose of cigarette butts properly.
- Talk to your local government about implementing a cigarette litter prevention program.
Cigarette litter is a major problem, but it is one that can be solved. By working together, we can make our communities cleaner and healthier.
