I Just Got A FINAL Notice From The IRS - What Do I Do?

I focus my practice on tax resolution, representing taxpayers in Colorado, Florida, and across the United States.  If you receive a final IRS notice, it is important to take immediate action to address the issue. Here are steps you can take:

1. Read the notice carefully: Understand the reason for the notice, the deadline for response, and any actions required from your end.

2. Gather necessary documents: Collect all relevant documents, such as tax returns, W-2 forms, and receipts, to support your case or to verify any discrepancies.

3. Contact the IRS: If you have any questions or need clarification, call the phone number provided on the notice. Be prepared to provide your taxpayer identification number and have the notice handy for reference.

4. Pay the amount owed: If the notice is regarding unpaid taxes, you should pay the amount owed as soon as possible to avoid additional penalties and interest. Payment options include online payment, check, money order, or setting up an installment plan with the IRS.

5. Dispute the notice if necessary: If you believe the notice is incorrect or there has been a misunderstanding, you have the right to dispute it. Follow the instructions provided on the notice to initiate the dispute process. Provide any supporting documentation or evidence that can help resolve the issue.

6. Seek professional assistance if needed: If you find the notice complex or challenging to handle on your own, consider seeking help from a tax professional such as an Enrolled Agent (EA), who can guide you through the process and represent you before the IRS if necessary.

Remember, it is crucial to respond promptly to any IRS notice to prevent further complications.
