In real estate, we are normally tasked with buying and selling homes for clients and serving the needs of customers. Then again sometimes it is us the agent that buys and sells our own home. Think of this daunting time as an opportunity to gain empathy with our clients. What better way to understand the hassles of dealing with home inspection items, endless requests from your mortgage underwriter, quotes from movers and handymen - and it's a perfect storm when they all try to reach you at the same time.
So the lesson learned is that we learn to have compassion and understanding when an irate client or disgruntled customer is looking to vent their frustrations on us. It is normal for them to vent, raise their voices, lose their cool, and say things they may even regret when they are hot under the collar and cannot take it anymore.
So we are moving again, back to Virginia in the Fredericksburg area, to be closer to family, and have experienced all of the above firsthand. I have to remember that moving is a refresher course in the human emotions that we have to deal with when buying and selling a home or real estate. When we personally move or relocate it is probably the best real estate and relocation course you can take! Even though there is no CE credit, the lessons learned are much more valuable and can be easily applied when dealing with future clients and all our real estate dealings.
My wife and I are grateful that we have many years of solid active participation in real estate and we are looking forward to moving back once again to Virginia. It's smart to realize our clients do not have that advantage and experience. So the lesson here is to listen, empathize, not react or join in any hostility, and try to be as helpful as possible to resolve an issue of which you are part.
