Launching into the Future: Texas A&M to Build Space Institute
The Texas A&M board of regents dropped quite the bombshell this month by approving the establishment of the Texas A&M Space Institute, a $200M venture located close to the Johnson Space Center. Intending to solidify Texas's position at the forefront of space exploration, this facility promises innovative strides in areas such as mission training, advanced robotics, aeronautics research, and explorations focused on the moon and Mars.
This initiative was fueled by State Rep. Greg Bonnen, R-Friendswood, who championed House Bill 3447, investing a staggering $350 million in the space sector of Texas. Out of this, Texas A&M gets $200 million for the construction of the space institute.
In the words of Texas A&M System Chancellor John Sharp, “The Texas A&M Space Institute will make sure the state expands its role as a leader in the new space economy." And with Texas A&M University boasting four astronauts on their payroll and contributing significantly to NASA’s Mars projects, the potential seems limitless!
Pearland and Friendswood Housing Market Takes a Dip
A quick glance at the housing market dynamics in the Pearland and Friendswood areas reveals that fewer homes exchanged hands in July 2023 compared to July 2022. Not only did the number of home sales witness a drop, but the median prices in most ZIP codes also saw a decline. Interestingly, ZIP code 77546 was an exception, with a notable surge in the median home sales price. Homes, on the other hand, stayed on the market longer across all ZIP codes, suggesting a slowing pace in the housing market.
Pearland Gets Serious About Water Conservation
Droughts can test the resilience and resourcefulness of any community, and Pearland is no exception. As the city grapples with persistent drought conditions, there has been a clarion call to citizens to rally together in water conservation endeavors.
In addition to the existing Stage One restrictions of the Drought Contingency Plan, Pearland authorities have provided a list of helpful steps to make every drop count. From repairing leaky faucets to utilizing pool covers and installing faucet aerators, the list is both practical and easy to implement. Moreover, residents are urged to observe outdoor watering restrictions and to be prepared for potential Stage 2 restrictions if the drought conditions continue.
