A life changing day away from real estate

By
Real Estate Agent with RE/MAX Advantage

We have all had them.  Moments in life that impact us in a way that we did not expect and it changes us in a way we never expected.

Real estate is a tough business and it just gets tougher all the time. It is very demanding indeed. There is so much to learn and so much to absorb. I have spoken to many AR friends over the past year and lately spoke to my friend Tracy Santrock. Tracy and I spoke for over an hour early last week sharing the latest and greatest real estate technology, Search Engine Optimization tools, marketing tools and much more.

With all the success in my career over the past years I always felt there was something else I wanted in my life other than this busy world of real estate and I always felt it would have something to do with children.  In fact, when my broker asked me 2 years ago what I would do if I didn't sell real estate, I responded by telling him "I don't know but I know I want to work with children".

Over a month ago my sister asked if I would volunteer as a scorer for the Junior Golf Program my nephew is part of.  It required that I take a day off in the middle of the week to walk 9 holes of golf with 4 young randomly selected kids that were 11 years of age.  A the time I said "Sure" just thinking it would be a nice break from work and fun.

Well last Thursday was the day for me to be a scorer for 4 wonderful kids, Brandon, Chance, Michelle and Sky.  My job was to keep score and to make sure they all followed the rules of golf.

Brandon hit his first drive on the first hole and I was in awe!  This kid is a Tiger Woods in the making if I have ever seen one!  This kid is averaging better scores than grown men on a very tough 9 hole course.  His swing is one of the sweetest, purest I have ever seen and I watch a lot of golf.  I told him to remember me when he goes on tour!

Chance had a smile and a happy go lucky attitude that just lit up the place.  It didn't matter if he hit great shot or a bad shot, his attitude and smile remained constant.  He pretty much guaranteed we all had a light hearted great time.

Michelle was a cute little blonde girl that seemed to just be out for a Sunday afternoon drive.  She didn't take the game too seriously and she has a wonderful genuine smile that will light up any room. She just remained very consistent and just kept "smiling" and was just as agreeable and kind as anyone I have ever been around.

Sky was very reserved and her golf game was not real good and I just tried to pump her up with words of encouragement.  It wasn't until the 7th hole until I finally heard Sky say more than one word at a time when she said "Putt it, roll it, hole it" to Chance when he was getting ready to putt.  As I mentioned, Sky didn't golf very good that day and finally, here we are on the last hole.  Brandon, Michelle and Chance have all missed the last putt on the last hole which was about a 5 foot putt and would save par.  I looked at Sky and said "Putt it, roll it, hole it".  She just smiled at me and swung the putter.  The ball went strait in the hole!  Sky had a smile wider than Niagara Falls as she proceeded to get high fives from everyone!

I simply had the time of my life last Thursday and when it was all over I was kind of saddened that it had all come to an end.  What I felt from all those kids is hard to put into words. They all had something special they brought to the course that day and they all touched me in a special way.

I hope that in the hustle and bustle of your real estate career you have something away from the business where you can leave the cell phone in the car and give your heart and soul to something or someone that brings a joy to your heart and allows you to give something back to this great world. The world will not end if you miss a few calls over a few hours. Trust me, it will give you a balance and a purpose that we all need.

I don't think Brandon, Chance, Michelle and Sky have any idea what they did for me that day.

Go out and Putt it, Roll it and hole it!

Hi George...Well, here's one for TLW's six word challenge.

Children make the world go round!

They are capable of bring so much joy to our lives.  They simply have no idea!  They need us too though and I am glad that you shared your time with them.

Cheers to your smart sister.

Pat - Thank you very much and I hope you can get away from the rigors of real estate and be blessed by doing something you really love.

Liz - So true my friend.

Alpine Lakes Real Estate - Yes, real estate is not my whole world...thanks.

Virginia - Yes, there is a whole world out there waiting for us.

Tracy - I have saved comments in the past that have touched me and I am saving yours!  One thing that I want to correct my friend is that golf is not my passion.  People are my passion and that is why I love real estate and love children so much.  Golf is simply a way for me to escape the rigors of a high stress career but people have always been my passion my friend.  Pat yourself on the back because you are one amazing lady.

Gary - Good for you.  I am so happy you are involved in childrens lives.  They are truly a blessing from above. All my best to you my friend.

Kathleen - Yes my friend, children bring more to us than they will ever know. Thank you.

What a great experience.  I love working with kids - and it give me a lot of joy.  I volunteer with several groups that interact with children -- it makes one realize what is really important in life -- and it makes us honest.  thanks for sharing this experience.

George, that's great.  I'm sure those kids are saying the same thing about you.  You don't have any idea what you did for them that day.

I have taken time out to fundraise for the local high school lunch program and transit system tickets for the underprivileged children.  Kids shouldn't go to school hungry and they shouldn't walk for miles in the bitter Winter, to get to school. They can't learn when they're hungry or cold.

I have also been involved in other causes: filling a stable (buying animals for families in 3rd world countries); breast cancer research; local animal shelters, etc.

I like to think I'm doing my share, but it's never enough.  I need to dedicate more time to good causes.  Although I get great satisfaction and cry a lot of happy tears when I see how happy a client is, moving into a new house, it's nothing like what I feel, when I'm able to collect thousands of dollars for the hot lunch program (with the help of many, of course, but it's still a great feeling).

Sylvie - Good for you. There is so much more to this world than working 24/7 in real estate and that day with those 4 wonderful children just left me with such a great feeling that money and possessions cannot come close to giving me joy like those 4 children did.

George, I know the feeling. I coach my sports over the years. Seeing a kid smile is the most rewarding thing you can imagine. These kids are just trying to do their best. No stress or worries. Enjoy every chance you get. I Do!

Kids always brighten up my day and sounds like they did the same for your day as well!  Balance is hard to achieve in real estate but taking a break once in a while helps keep me sane :)
