DIY Often is NOT the Best Solution.

Now there is a twist I had never heard before. Timmothy's comic strip is about two guinea pigs (Titus & Philemon) and their owner Joe. Titus discovers a human hair in his bowl and it grosses him out.

It's been decades since I've seen a barber but then again that is because I am follically challenged (at least on top of my head). I assure you that my dog, Baby, will not find one of my hairs in her bowl. That being said I am a DIY'er and if I had hair I just might give myself a "bowl cut".

This subject is an easy segue into home ownership and DIY projects. When I purchased my first home I was 18 and earning minimum wage ($1.65 hr). I had to do all kinds of DIY projects including electrical, heating, plumbing, and construction. I had NO experience in any of these fields but I had to take the bull by the horns and tackle the task at hand. Fortunately I was better at it then Oliver Douglas.

Today DIY projects are much easier with all the videos on YouTube and home improvement sites. In my day I either had to ask friends for help or head to the library and look at B&W diagrams in books.

As easy as it is to find help today one needs to know their own limits and what is mandated by City, County, and State codes. Being "able" to do it doesn't always mean you should do it. Know your limits.

As you know Nina Hollander, Broker I love to tinker so DIY doesn't bother me BUT I'm sure there are things you breeze threw that terrify me. 😉

Top of the morning Bob.  I draw the line at electrical projects, except the most basic of trading out sockets.  Same with plumbing.  You Tube or not, I do not want the frustration or uncertainty of whether it was done right or not.  mdm

$1.65 and hour...It is remarkable that you were able to buy a home.  Well done!

I sure had to do a lot of do it yourself work after we bought our first home.  It is lucky that I did not hurt myself with some of the jobs, mostly doing electrical work and grinding down stucco with a grinder.  I am lucky to still have all of my fingers!

That is a good policy Mark Don McInnes, Sandpoint-Idaho . My first home had A plug-in in every room and I think all but one was a two prong plug-in. I had to learn.

That was my point Wanda Kubat-Nerdin - Wanda Can! so thank you for plainly saying it. When I cut my hair I do it with a safety razor.

Ray Henson it may even have been $1.35 back then but as you know everything was much less expensive back then. I too have been lucky not to have lost an appendage or limb. That being said I did crush a finger moving my daughters playhouse but I still have it.

Hi Bob- Larry is a big DIY person but respects his limitations. When he built the decking around our first hot tub (wooden) he did everything but the electrical. He called in his crew of electricians to be safe!! He does go to YouTube frequently to find out how to from others.

YouTube has been a very good thing for us DIYers Kathy Streib and of all the videos I have posted my DIY ones have been the most watched.

Oh man Bob I've seen some disaster DIY's when home owners call wanting to buy.  What were you thinking is what I'm thinking!  Now we need to get things cleaned up and get things down by professionals and up to code.  Some even didn't have permits to build.....whatever room (s) they had built.

That is the problem Anna "Banana" Kruchten , that most do not get permits and the work is usually far from code.

Endre Barath, Jr. I hate painting too. I do it if there is no calking or taping needed but even at that I hate it.

Well Tim, you probably save a lot of money not having to go to the barber shop. I go every 5 weeks for a cut and every other time I get highlights. Let's just say it isn't cheap. As far as DIYers, you can usually tell when something was a DIY. I don't know if people really think it looks good or if they're hoping you don't notice it is a DIY project.

Being bald does have it's advantages Carla Freund but still I'd rather have a full head of hair 😊. I agree that often it is easy to spot the work of a DIY project. When Sellers claim this or that was updated it's always a good idea to ask if permits were taken out. Irregardless of their answer you can always check with the City or County to verify.
