So many people seem to be making the move to Florida, but I have had a few folks talk to me about selling due some reasons that I will address below. Many of these sellers are relatively new to our state. Perhaps we need take more time to go over the pros and cons of living here.
1. Extreme Weather: Florida is known for its hurricane-prone climate. Residents often face the threat of hurricanes and tropical storms, leading to property damage, power outages, and evacuation orders. Seems people have short term memory of the devastation that Ian caused.
2. High Humidity: The state's humidity can be overwhelming, especially during the hot summer months. High humidity levels can make the weather feel even hotter and uncomfortable for those not accustomed to it. You better drink a lot of water!
3. Insects and Wildlife: Florida's warm and humid climate also supports a wide variety of insects and wildlife, including mosquitos, alligators, and snakes. Dealing with these creatures can be a concern for some residents. Did you know that Florida is home to invasive pythons and boa constrictors? We also have black bears, coyotes, bobcats, panthers and wild monkeys to name a few!
4. Traffic Congestion: Many parts of Florida, especially major metropolitan areas like Miami and Orlando, experience heavy traffic congestion. Commutes can be long and frustrating, impacting quality of life. In this agents opinion, the traffic is getting bad in just about every area of Florida due to the shear volume of people moving here. The infrastructure just isn't able to support the numbers.
5. Cost of Living: While Florida has no state income tax, the cost of living, especially in popular areas, can be relatively high. Housing costs, insurance, and property taxes can take a significant portion of one's budget. At one time, not too long ago, many parts of Florida were reasonable when it came to home affordability. That is no longer the case! Between skyrocketing property values, increasing insurance costs and rising interest rates, the dream of home ownership in this Florida seems to be fading fast. Say it with me fast with me 5 times! Finally found Florida to be unaffordable! If you don't make well over 100k/yr, you can pretty much forget about purchasing a home in any desirable city in this state. Wow, harsh words from a realtor in Florida, but it's true. Perhaps if interest rates come down, the affordability factor will be helped, right? Wrong! If rates come down to under 6.5% and we still have the low inventory levels we have now.....BOOM! You guessed it, all the buyers who have been waiting for rates to come down will drive the market into another buyers frenzy with multiple/over ask offers driving up home prices. The next 12-24 months will be interesting to watch play out.
Keep in mind that these drawbacks might not be equally applicable to all areas within Florida, and some people may still find the state appealing for its unique advantages.
