Lyft or Divvy Bikes can screw you with their incompetence

By
Real Estate Agent with Wayne M Martin

On Sunday September 10, 2023 I attempted to rent a Lyft/Divvy bike near downtown Chicago to ride to Soldier Field and attend the Chicago Bears and Green Bay Packers game. It took two docking stations to find a bike that was  not taken out of service but finally found one.

Off to Soldier Field to watch the game. Upon arrival at the first docking station it was full and there were approximately 30 bikes left without being docked. So, I moved on to a potential second site at my inconvenience and found the same situation. So on to the third docking station. Yep, you may have guessed by now it was also full and had many bikes left undocked.

Well, with no other choice because Divvy failed to live up to their service agreement and perform, they have billed me over $100 to cover their incompetence.

If I could have billed people for my lack of performance I would be a wealthy man. If I could not perform, they found the services of others. That is what I will do use Uber or public transportation. It will be less expensive and more trustworthy. A sad state of events.

So, for those who may be thinking of using Divvy Bikes keep in mind if they fail to perform you have to pay more. Nice business model.

Now is the need for change or you take the chance.

Kathy Streib - not only do they want to charge me a $100 + penalty, they want me to return the bike or pay for it. I have until 9/16. Another unscrupulous company doing business in Chicago. It figures! Time to give up on the Bears and the city. The criminals benefit and the innocent pay. Hope someone is enjoying the ride at my expense because of the incompetence of Divvy to plan for an uptake in business. Great business plan. Then again, I am not a fan.

Have you tried the BBB or contacting one of the local television stations??? This is ridiculous!!!

Well Wayne Martin  you are a brave man, I would never have considered this as an option... my choice would have been a Limo, second choice a taxi and third choice would have been an uber:)Endre

I was at the Seahawks game and the train drops us off right at the Stadium. Now if our team would have showed up it would have been great 🙄

Endre Barath, Jr. - In addition to a charge of over $100, they ow want me to pay for the bike. They have made this easy for me, now we will leave the city. It's corrupt here, always been, and any have escaped to the suburbs and turned them the same way. I hate the concept of voting with your feet but sometimes you have to admit defeat. If it were not for the grandkids, bye, bye Illinois.

Well Paul S. Henderson, REALTOR®, CRS.  Not only did I have to deal with the incompetence of Divvy Bikes, but I did it to see a terrible team embarrass themselves and the City against another not so good team. An invitation to abandon both. No more games and soon no longer a resident of the hell hole city.

Hello Wayne - while your experience was unfortunate, like Kathy Streib commented you deserve praise for your effort.   I have found some "workarounds" are not necessarily easy.

Michael Jacobs - my mistake was relying on the services Divvy Bike charged for would be delivered. My fault for that. Now I know. It will be a very costly mistake because I have to pay for their inability to perform.

Kat Palmiotti - my fault for trusting them to deliver what they promised. An expensive lesson to learn. Could have taken a limousine for less than this fiasco will cost. The blessing here I will will not attend any more games at Soldier Field and will be relocating out of the city as soon as my grandson's school year is over. I have committed to pick him up and drop him off at school. I keep my promises and deliver good service. Old fashion that way!

Hi Wayne:

Wow, sounds like a pretty frustrating situation, AND expensive. I wonder if other similar companies are any better? How about a complaint with the BBB?

Sorry you had to deal with all this. I have never even considered using those bikes.

Jeff

Jeff Dowler, CRS - It is frustrating and will be expensive before it is over. As for the BBB here in Chicago it is as copout as our local government. So best to forget about the bikes, pay the extortion and move on.

Wow interesting business model.  Good for you to read to Solider Field. From downtown that can be a ride.  I guess the good people continue to pay for poor service.

Hi, Wayne Martin - I do have to commend you on your ingenuity in trying the bike as an alternative to dealing with the traffic.

However,  your situation is horrific.  I can't imagine having to deal with this.

I wonder if disputing the charges on your credit card is an option?

Sheri Sperry - MCNE® - this is a democratically controlled corrupt town with in their pocket judges. I have experience in this crap. We are planning to exit the city after our commitment to take and pick-up my grandson from school is over. If your vote won't count you vote with your feet.

Fortunately the team I root for is ar enough away that I can't bike there.   This sounds like a nightmare - and these bikes are a problem around DC when people just leave them on the sidewalk and walk away

I haven't seen divvy bikes and while I know of Lyft, I haven't seen any bikes by them either. Citibike dominates the field here. I haven't used it and I am tempted, but I am so clumsy and haven't been on bike since my youth, I am reluctant.

That is too bad. Once when I was in downtown Chicago, I got to tour via the Segway Tour. It was a great way to see the city. You, had a much more ambitious journey.

 To all who have repsonded.

Luckily I was not the only one facing this situation. Many left their bikes because Lyft/Divvy was not prepared. They have offered a solution, at a cost, that is such better than expected and therefore not worth fighting. Still an expensive lesson. It is over
